We are scheduled to see her on friday as a meet and great sort of thing to discuss our concerns and decide if she is the one we want to use. I am excited and anxious at the same time.

I asked my midwife about her transfer rate, what the most common reason was for transfer and protocol for if I went past my due date. I pretty much knew going into the meeting that I wanted to hire her based on recommendations so I asked the questions that were important to me given it was my first home birth and I had been induced for all of my other labors. She had a lot of information and answered most of our questions before we asked them. We went over my past labor/birth experiences and hopes for my upcoming birth.

I hope you have a great appointment!

yay! I ended up not having to ask any questions. My midwife went over EVERYTHING.

Some of the things she talked about that were important:

training/number of deliveries/how long she's been practicing
transfer rate as well as what happens in the event of transfer
what would risk you out of a homebirth
She gave us a "due range" - a set of dates where she would comfortably do a homebirth (roughly 37-42 weeks gestation)

You might also ask what type of role she usually plays during labor. Is she hands-on or let-you-do-your-own-thing. and which type would you prefer. If anything feels "off" ask if there's a previous client of hers you could talk to and get first hand experience from.

be prepared to go over previous births and talk about your expectations.

btw, did you see the one mama's post in the DDC from the hospital/birth center/homebirth thread? I'm sooooo hoping she doesn't pick a fight with us. But if she does, I'm so super glad I won't be the ONLY homebirther in our DDC!

I did see that! She sounds like someone who is out to just start drama though. Not her birth not her choice.

All the above mentioned stuff, and we also asked some questions like

"what has been your scariest scenario as a midwife and how did you handle it?"
"have you ever missed a birth?"
"what's a 'good' birth to you?"

I also asked a lot of silly questions like...
"is it messy?"
"will I poop?"
and so on...

i'm not sure what questions to ask as my only appt with a midwife was a terrible experience. i would just say don't sign anything....that is if she has you sign anything...unless you're absolutely sure she's the one. i hope your appt goes great!
