Hi ladies!! I actually introduced myself a while ago with my last pregnancy, but we lost that baby...so I get to start the planning all over again!

I am Heather, 24 married to Matt who is also 24. We are expecting our first together. I've been through labor & delivery before, at a hospital (no epi) with an OB, so I'm not a stranger to the labor part. BUT I'm a birth mom, so I am definitely a stranger to the whole raising a child thing as I placed that baby with loving parents.

That was 5/6 years ago and now that I am preparing for MY first baby....I am reflecting back on that whole experience and not wanting to have that again. I seem to have a long list of wants/desires that will not be able to be fulfilled by even the family centered hospital in my area. I have a very close friend who had a home birth in Feb. so I of course was like wow...thats so amazing. I am still in the planning stages. I'm under the care of a midwife but I have not posed the "could we do a home birth" question because I don't want to be treated like a leper that early in my care.

There is a home birth circle that meets once a month here in Rochester so I am planning on going with DH a couple of times to get info, meet other home birthers and find out what midwives support it. I know there is ONE midwife in the area that openly does home births (she actually delivered Ani Defranco's baby) and I have her contact information as well.

DH is VERY supportive of it, in fact when I mentioned doing the hospital tour of 2 hospitals he was like "...but I thought we were having the baby here...." hehe. My MIL is a nurse...a NICU nurse, so she is very much technology based. She is more worried about the baby than she is about me during delivery (in a good way), so she will be the wild card.

Anyways - I look forward to getting to know all of you guys and reading your birth stories and coming to you when the naysayers make me second guess my decision to have a home birth!

Welcome!! I grew up in Rochester, small world huh? I still live in NY, but down in the hudson valley. I had a home birth almost 17 months ago, with my youngest girl, Kate. It was such an awesome experience, and I hope you are able to have one too. My midwives travel all around and are involved in a lot of different groups, if you want some names of midwives in your area that do homebirths, let me know.

Congrats!

Welcome and congratulations! I had my first home birth with my 2nd child this past November. First thing i learned was if you're going to tell people you're even thinking of having the baby at home, be prepared for an onslaught of opinions thrown at you.

Can't wait to get to know you more

I'm Marisa, I'm one of your co-hosts here! I hope you have the birth you really want and that everything goes good for you.

Oh awesome!!! I'll definitely have to send you a PM after the group meeting. My friend had her home birth in Buffalo!

DH is kind of funny - I mentioned to him last night that I found the group that meets and he kind of spazzed out a little bit. And the funny thing is that he isn't worried about ME having issues or the baby having issues...he is worried about the stuff like how we get the birth certificate, etc. Haha.

Haha, getting my HB babies birth certificate was a heck of a lot easier than getting my hospital babies cert! Dane's was 10 minutes of waiting, 10 dollars to file and we had it the same day. Gage, I didn't get it till he was almost 3 and it cost me almost 30 bucks to have it sent to me!

I had no problems getting Kate's birth certificate either. Our midwives filled out a form that they had, then DH took it to the Town Clerk's office and it was given to us the same day. No charge or anything, super easy. Getting her SS number was easy as well, I had to have the birth certificate and a note from the pediatrician (or midwife) stating that we had a baby, LOL.

Oh wow that sounds pretty simple.

DH is an accountant, so he is VERY much into the little teeny tiny details that I don't have the answers for. In fact - I overwhelmed him by giving him like 6 different answers from different birth stories that I've read and just said "...but I don't know yet which one would apply to us". Its not like I don't have plenty of time to start the research...I didn't wake up at 35 weeks and go...I want a home birth now, hehe.

I did tell him that when he thought about it and had questions to write them down or tell them to me and we can start our list for when we go to the group meeting. That kind of relieved him a little bit.

That is a great idea! What helped sell my husband on the idea was meeting our midwife and asking her all the questions he had and her answering them detailed. So I think a list is a great start.
