The good news? My insurance (UnitedHealthcare) and plan updated Sep 01st and now covers home birth (or, rather, no longer explicitly excludes home birth). Before, they just covered the midwife's prenatal and postnatal care, but not the birth itself. Now, they cover it all.
What's weird though is no one told us. I just happened to be checking my plan online to see if they covered breast pumps or anything like that and I noticed some of the wording had changed. I looked closer, saw the home birth clause was gone, called them to confirm and then phoned my midwife's billing agent to change our payment scheme.
What kind of scares me is that if I hadn't noticed, we could have ended up just paying cash up front.
The moral of the story? Double, triple, quadruple check your insurance policy.
