After asking around on my natural parenting Yahoo group, I found out that I'm pretty lucky in that I have quite a large selection of birth centers and midwives. In Cleveland, there were midwives that worked out of hospitals, but the only natural birthing center had been shut down, and our homebirth midwives have been shoved into a closet. If you want to find a midwife, you had to know someone who knew someone, kwim? That was one thing that encouraged us to go to the hospital. Ohio is not home-birth friendly at all.
BUT since we live near Toledo, we are right on the Michigan/Ohio border, and there are SO many midwives in Michigan who serve our area! I am going to go to this center first: Mother's Own because it sounds like the home-environment that we are looking for and the appointment hours are the most convenient. I called the midwife there, and she seemed like she might be a good fit for us. I'm going to talk to her in person on Thursday. I am still not sure if we want to go to the center or have the baby here at home. I'm leaning more towards the center at this point, because this isn't just our home, it is DH's family's as well. Also it seems more convenient to go somewhere that already has the birth tub set up, and we won't have to worry about cleaning it and where to store it etc.
Anyway, I'm wondering what kinds of things I should ask her when we meet on thursday? She came HIGHLY recommended by all but one mother that I talked to. How do I know if she's the one for us?

Thank You, Pattyandthemoos, for my beautiful siggy!
For us, I called and spoke to a few different midwives, then sat down for a meet and greet appt with one of them. As soon as I walked in the room we just clicked, and I knew "she was it". I bet you'll get the same feeling. Good luck, let us know how it goes!
