Hello, I am a mother of 2 and DH and I are expecting our 3rd. I have been looking into home births for a long time and think that its whats best for me and my family. However having Michigan inssurance (through the state/Medicaide) we have to pay out of pocket for a CNM.

I spoke with one today and really like her. She charges $85 for the first visit, and $45 each visit there after. $1500 for the birth. And the rent a birthing pool from her she charges $85.

With me Being almost 20 wks along i would like to make up my mind. Hubby is all for a home birth, its the cost that he's not fond of. Only because He just recently went back to work so money is tight. The MW did tell me she would let us pay her with our income taxes in January.

I went into labor with DS at 26 weeks due to falling off a snowmobile. I delivered at 37 weeks. 6 months later I was pregnant again and went into labor with DD at 16 weeks, delivered at 35.
After speaking with the MW, she informed me that anything sooner than 36 weeks I would have to have a hospital birth. So if I would like I could keep my Ob, and keep seeing him for my care, along with seeing her, that way we have a back up plan if I do go into labor early.

I would really like this home birth, and doing everything I can to talk DH into it. Does this MW sound like a fare price.

What would you do, and how would you convince DH?? Thanks for all your help!

She actually is a pretty fair price! Its less than what we paid for our home birth and I also am in Michigan and had medicaid (for a back up incase i had to go to the hospital). My 2nd baby was my HB and his birth total cost $1,860. My midwife charges between $1,500 to $2,100 and we paid a little bit at each visit. That was fine with her as long as everything was paid up by the 6 week pp visit.

Convincing my husband mainly I made him watch The Business of Being Born and then we both went and met with my midwife (who is a CPM not a CNM) for a consult and he asked her every question he could think of, expressed all his concerns (my 1st was a c-section so we were going vbac) and she answered all his questions with long very informative answers.

I also expressed my feelings on the situation. While my 1st wasn't early I did not want another c-section. I made it clear to him I knew i could do it, I knew I wanted to do it and i needed his support more than anything. He gave the go ahead after we met with the midwife. He was nervous throughout the whole pregnancy but his concerns were normal.

I hope you can help convince him for what you want and if keeping the OB to help ease fears incase you do go into labor early and look to deliver before 36 weeks.

The good thing about this midwife is that she also said she'd even barter some of it to us to help us afford it (hubby is an electrician and a Machanic). She said she also has MANY payment plans. This is what I want, and I know I can do it! With DD I had no medications, but had no control over anything, DH even almost missed DD's birth because the nurses kept kicking him out of the room!
I was also moved 3 times! twice durring labor and once PP. I really cant do that again!

Thanks for your input. I really hope DH goes for this. I know it seems like alot, but I know we can afford it.
