I had my midwife appointment today. BP/urine/baby's heart rate all okay. I am measuring better - 36cm. Weight was only up half a pound. She took my blood to recheck my iron. And she checked me - 50% effaced and 1-2cm dilated.

Then we went over to see her backup doctor. She's never really used him so he doesn't know her well. He was funny and a little strange, but better than the other OB I saw. He wasn't exactly FOR home births, but not exactly completely against them either. If that makes sense. He had some pretty harsh recommendations... first he said we should get another ultrasound 2 weeks after the last one to check the baby's growth (that would be next Monday). Then he said I should be having weekly non-stress tests. And then he was really insisting on inducing by 39 weeks. He tried scaring me... my risk of still birth is higher because of the MTHFR and the borderline IUGR. Do I really want to risk that? The further along I get, the bigger the risk. That I could be walking around one day and the baby just dies. Well, that can happen to anyone.

Anyway, I'm hoping my midwife will get back to me with some natural labor induction that I can start on. I've already started some things. She's going to borrow a NST machine so when I see her again, she can watch the baby. So, we'll see... I'm more worried that as week 40 approaches, me or Michael will get too scared and want the induction. I keep telling myself that this is something I've always had (the MTHFR) and it's never affected me before (this late in pregnancy). And if the baby does become completely IUGR, then we probably should be induced. But, I'll be praying that doesn't happen.

Maybe your midwife can do somethings to speed labor along. With my last two my midwife helped things along without actually inducing. With Leo he was so big they wanted him out and I am so glad because I just don't think I could have handled him much bigger. My m/w had me take castor oil (nasty, nasty stuff) and then did a really aggressive exam. Between the two I was in labor.

She wrote me up an induction plan and emailed it to me last night. Includes stuff like EPO, sex, nipple stimulation and then starting next week, stripping membranes 3 times that week, using something called Nature's Sunshine 5-W and some sort of oil blend. I emailed her back a bunch of questions. I have to go in search of this 5-W herb, not sure I'll find it locally. Might just have to order it.

If I HAVE to do castor oil, I will. We'll see

I would try all the other stuff first before even thinking about Castor Oil. That stuff is disgusting, but in my case it did work.

I agree, castor oil would be my last option as well. Sounds like a lot of good natural induction options! Good luck!! Nipple stimulation with a breastpump always worked well for me. I'd use it in early labor to bring on stronger contractions.
