DH and I decided that we wanted to have the 20 week anatomy scan. I just want peace of mind knowing that everything is okay. So the midwife wrote out an order at Monday's appointment.

I called the place that she suggested first. It isn't a hospital or medical facility, but they do medical scans including OB scans. Well, they don't accept our insurance. Financially, DH and I are not in a position to pay out of pocket for something that our insurance would cover. I mean, that is why we pay every month for our insurance, right? So I called the number on the back of my insurance card to get some places that they do cover. The first place I called transferred me to one of those scheduling agencies. That lady told me that the places I was trying to get into don't do OB scans so she'll transfer me to Toledo Hospital. This is the conversation I had with the women on the Toledo Hospital line:
Me: I need to schedule an ultrasound for a 20 week anatomy scan in pregnancy
Lady: Okay... are you calling for a patient?
Me:No, I am the patient.
Lady: Are you calling from a doctor's office?
Me: No, I'm calling from my home.
Lady: Who's your doctor?
Me: My general practitionor is Dr. ____ but I do not have an OB/GYN. I'm seeing a midwife.
Lady: Yes, but who is the DOCTOR.
Me: There isn't one
Lady: There *has* to be.
Me: No, I am seeing a certified nurse midwife. She has physicians who she consults, but no one oversees her.
Lady: You're saying that you only see this midwife and no doctor
Me (getting irritated): Yes ma'am, She is a certified nurse midwife and I have an order here from her for an ultrasound, and I'd like to schedule it because you are the only facility that accepts my insurance.
Lady: Well, we don't *accept* appointments made by the patient, they need to be made by a doctor, so I suggest you find a doctor at this point.

UUUUURRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

So then I asked her if Flower Hospital did obstetric ultrasounds, and she transferred me to them. It took such a lonnnng time, and I kept getting transferred back and forth, but I finally did get scheduled for one! It is tomorrow morning, but it was either that or mid-february. I just can't believe how much of a run-around they gave me, or how rude that woman was! Or their policy! I mean, really if they don't want our business....

Wow, I would definitely look into calling that place back and asking to speak to a higher up.

I'm glad you're getting in though! Sucks about all that hassle but thats awesome you're going tomorrow

Ugh! I'm sorry you had to deal with that!! Your convo with the woman at Toledo Hospital is about as good as mine with our insurance! They told me that they don't cover home births because of the "liability" and then asked me if I needed help finding a hospital... GRRR... Stupid people!

I think that is the same reason as the hospital's policy. They hear "homebirth" and want no part in it because it could make them accountable. But honestly, I think I'd be more likely to sue them if we found out at birth that there was something wrong that could have been helped had we had the 20 week scan, and they wouldn't allow it. Or if there was some reason that a homebirth isn't safe for this baby, and we could have known with the u/s. It just makes no sense to me why they wouldn't make services like this easier for women to obtain. Well, it does from an evil medical empire point of view, but that's another thread entirely LOL

I have a hard time scheduling my u/s's as well at our hospital. The people scheduling don't seem to understand that a CNM can write out scripts just like a doctor. At least thats the confusion I run into. Luckily now that I've called a few times they have my midwives' info in my file, so it isn't much of a hassle... but the first few times it was!

Anyways, I'm glad its scheduled, I hope it all goes well and I can't wait to find out the gender!!
