I have been trying to come up with lots of good important questions to ask the midwife. We are having a consult Feb. 7th

here is my list, how does it look? did I forget anything important?

General Questions
How, when, and where did you receive your midwifery education?
How many clients do you have due in any 4 week period?
Have you ever missed a birth? If so, what were the circumstances?
How many births have you attended?
At what point would placenta previa make me high risk?
What are your normal guidelines for weight gain, or do you just stress good nutrition?
Do you deliver breech babies?
What do you do to try to turn a breech baby?
How long are you willing to wait for a baby in a bad position to change positions before labeling the pregnancy high risk?
Do you use eye ointment and vitamin K shot? If so can I decline?
What percentage of your clients tear?
What is your protocol to prevent tearing?
How many 3rd or 4th degree tears have you had? Up to what degree do you suture? How many episiotomies have you performed?

Prenatal Care
Are you available 24 hours a day every day?
Do you require specific tests during pregnancy? (i.e. One-Hour Glucose Screen, Group B Strep, etc.)
What is your back-up system during pregnancy and labor—when you go on vacation, are sick or with another mother?
What do your checkups consist of?
Do you allow the mother to go past 42 weeks and still have a homebirth?
Do you come to my home any time before I go into labor?

Hospital and Obstetrician
What problems or complications in pregnancy would mean that a physician would become my primary caregiver?
Under what circumstances do you transfer to the hospital?
What is your percentage of hospital transfers?
What is your typical transfer, one that requires intervention, or one where the mom desires it?
What would be the plan of action if a transfer to hospital were necessary?
What care could you give me if I needed to transfer?
Would you stay with me in the hospital? In the operating room? For how long after the birth?

General Labor
What equipment and supplies do you bring to a birth?
What supplies do I need for the birth?
When do I call you?
How many assistants do you normally bring to the birth?
What exactly is your assistant's role?
Do you consider yourself hands-on or hands-off? Why?
How many people are you comfortable with being present at the labor and birth?
What do you do if there is meconium in the water?
What natural comfort techniques do you provide?
What homeopathics and/or herbs do you use at births?
If I am 10cm dilated but don’t feel the urge to push, what would your response be?
What type of tub do you use for water births? Can I use my own blow up pool if I wanted too?
Can my daughter be allowed in the water with me?
How often do you listen to baby during labor?
How many internal checks do you normally perform?
What if my water breaks and contractions do not start?
Do you allow the placenta to be delivered underwater?
Can the cord be allowed to pulse before cutting?
What is done with the placenta once its delivered?
How much time do you allow for the delivery of the placenta?
How do you handle emergencies?

After the Birth
What protocol do you use to stop excessive bleeding after delivery?
Can baby remain in my arms after birth and hold off cleaning for a few minutes?
Can I nurse baby right away?
Will you be able to help me with any breastfeeding problems?
How long do you stay after the birth?
Do you help with cleanup?
Do you do the required newborn screening bloodtests, or will I need to see a doctor for this?
How do I obtain the baby’s birth certificate?
How often do you come to see me after I give birth?
What do these visits include?
How often will I visit you after the birth?
What do these visits include?
Why are they important?
Do you examine the baby at any of these visits?
What does the examination include?

Great list! The only other thing I will be asking, is how much she charges, and how she will handle payment.

and I agree with oriel13...I wouldn't have thought of half of that! Good job!
