Thanks to the hard work of a lot of amazing women... it looks like midwives might be able to work independently for the first time ever in NY. Up until this point, for a midwife to legally practice, she needed a Written Practice Agreement with a physician. Due to rising insurance costs and other reasons, a lot of doctors won't sign a WPA with a midwife not in their practice... makes sense, but does leave the homebirth midwife pretty much screwed. Well the NYS assembly just voted to get rid of the need for the WPA. It passed 95-17! So happy!!! It still has to pass through the senate, which should happen in the next day or so, then it goes to the governor. They are about to recess for the summer, so its all been a bit rushed... but the supporters are hopeful.
My mw lost her WPA when St. Vincent's Hospital closed. She is technically illegal right now. I have been blowing up the phones in Albany for over a month. This is so exciting. I pray it passes. Thankfully all of the mws in my area have been practicing as usual in the interim, but they a risking their necks by doing so.
