This happened where I live and actually at a hospital that we thought about but were warned against before choosing the home birth route. This freaks me out as it's suppose to have one of the best NICUs in the city and we talked about going to this hospital if we needed to transfer... not anymore!
The midwife is actually one of the most respected ones in this city. I'm so peeved (I'm actually thinking of another word but won't post it) for this family.
That is HORRIBLE....I cannot believe that nurse...ugh...that would totally make me angry!!!! Even for "slightly elevated" numbers they dont have to do the phototherapy. UGH.....What a terrible ordeal!

We aren't to give a baby milk, berries, or peanut butter. We are to introduce new foods one at a time. But it's OK to inject several viruses, bacteria, aluminum, formaldehyde, phenoxyethanol, animal serum, mercury, squalene and more into an 8 week old? I don't think so.
In order to be healthy it is an unfortunate fact that people must be allowed the opportunity to be ill. I trust my body and those of my children to work correctly against the relatively benign diseases they vax for, and do not trust the ingredients in the vaccinations.
Our choice to not vax isn't based in ignorance, poverty, conspiracy theory and rumor. It's research, common sense, fact and evidence based..something the medical community has largely forgot about.
That is just horrible! So many mean things are going on in my brain right now. That nurse needs to be fired and have her RN license taken away...how dare her take it upon herself AFTER a dr. said it was fine!
That is just scary! And so wrong, that nurse was obviously just peeved that they were a HB transfer and had to take out her judgmental attitude on that poor family I'm so glad I'm not going to a hospital this time!

I talked to my midwife about this today. She was telling me that a few years ago she had a really great experience w/ a transfer at that hospital, she was even greeted when she got there! So she's thinking it's more the nurse than the hospital and thinks that *if* I needed to be transferred and went there, it probably wouldn't be too bad as they are under so much scrutiny over this. Let's just hope I don't need to worry about transferring.
I truly hope that nurse gets disciplined as there was absolutely no reason for her to pretty much hold that couple's baby hostage. Whether or not you believe in home birth it is everyone's right and as a nurse you should do your job if someone comes in and keep your opinions and nasty attitude to yourself and NOT hijack someones child.
The nursing staff told the parents they would have to place their daughter, Lilia Taylor Rogers, in isolation to undergo phototherapy and not allowed to nurse, but fed artificially with formula instead.
Seriously I most likely would have been thrown in jail if they had did this to me. Ugh!
