I'm sure i've already asked this...but the post in NCB really brought it home that water is almost always routinely broken by the docs in the hospitals, it made me wonder how often it REALLY happens naturally.

In your HB, did yours break? When?

My water broke spontaneuosly at the very start of labour. It was actually quite funny. I had placed a vinyl tablecloth on the bed weeks before - just in case. I got out of bed to go to the bathroom and thought there may have been a trickle. I moved around to see if more would come out and nothing... so I thought I was imagining things. The second I went back to bed and sat down whoosh. Made me laugh and the more I laughed the more water there was. Thank goodness for the tablecloth.

For a friend of mine who has had 3 homebirths her waters broke spontaneously at the start of all three labours. From what I understand the water breaks spontaneously at the start of labour in about 30% of women.

Oh that was a good story.

My homebirthed baby: My membranes ruptured before I felt any contractions. But I know I was having them. I just don't feel them until they get harsh.

my water broke to start labor with Grace at 37w2d (had her in the hospital)

my water broke while I was pushing, about 10 minutes before Lily was born (at home). She was born the day before her due date.

my water broke as Felicity crowned, at home, and she was born 4 days before her due date.

I agree with this! I had contractions all day--they were even 4 minutes apart--and didn't really hurt much. Once my water broke, though---YOWCHY!
