I am sooooo very excited to even have the option! We have been planning a hospital birth due to the fact that it is what our insurance covers and we couldnt really afford much more than a doula. I went to my first childbirth ed. class today that is taught by my doula (who is also a homebirth CPM) and I said something to her that really got me thinking. I said, "I feel that I will be worrying the entire time Im at the hospital about whether or not the nurse/doctor that just came through the door is going to try to give me pitocin or rupture my membranes or perform some other unnecessary task without asking me first or even letting me know whats going to happen." I then realized what an awful situation I would be in if that were the case. It makes so much more sense to me to give birth in a safe and relaxing environment with people I know and trust than to be in a forced situation where Im scared out of my mind with strangers making the whole thing worse. This may be the only time I give birth and I dont want to look back on it with regret. I discussed this with my husband on our drive home and he says if this is what I want to do that he will figure out a way to pay for it. We still have to talk to our doula/CPM to figure out the specifics but I feel in my heart that this will happen! I just had to share.

Jenny

UPDATE:

I just got off the phone with Angie and she said she'd be honored to assist our birth!!! She is even basing the fee on our income so we can afford it!!!! I'm soooo excited!!!! YAY!!!
I can do a water birth if I like, too!

Now I need to help my mom feel a little better about the whole thing. She is scared that its dangerous. I already have plans to show her the stats and all the links I can find. I dont want her to be worried.

*DOES HAPPY DANCE*

I would say to call your insurance company! My sister-in-law called them and outlined the difference in pricing of a hospital birth vs a home birth. She said you're going to save $8,000, it's up to you (even though it was an empty threat as she would've never let them decide). They took 24 hours and called her back and said go for it. She had to be persistent with gettiing to talk to the right person but it paid off. Blue Cross Blue Shield paid for her home birth! It's worth a try.

I am on Medicaid. They are really strict about what they cover and what they dont anyway. I guess I could try, but I feel that it would be a waste of time.

I went through the same thing with my fifth pregnancy. I could not imagine laboring and at the same time having to be "on guard". Most midwives are willing to work with you, and many will even barter all or part of their fee. My mw back in AL charged $1900 for everything- prenatals, attending the birth, and checkups afterwards. I do know she arranged with one couple to have a video of their waterbirth made in lieu of payment... she then used that video as preparation for other couples. Most of them are very flexible, and committed enough to their calling that they WANT to see your homebirth happen for you, and will work with you.

Anyway, I really hope you find a way to make it work out.

Oh sweetie, congratulations! I am so very envious. Thanks for the link about the legalities by state. Mine doesn't cover unfortunately. I have private insurance and Medicaid, but can't get a homebirth covered. I know you will have a wonderful, magical experience having your little one in the safety of your own home.

Angie truely is a wonderful person. I'm so glad I found her! She is the only midwife in the area (the only one I found after searching relentlessly) and I'm lucky that she is so awesome!

I'm SOSOSOSOSO Happy for you! I knew when I made my choice that it was the right thing for me, and i walked on a cloud for WEEKS! Now as the due date looms people keep asking if I'm getting scared and that sounds so funny to me! I'm SOOO excited about birth!

Oh, wow, you're due in Feb! You will have to let me know how it goes! I'm sure it will be wonderful! I'm not too far behind you being due late March which I have a feeling will spill over to April.

I almost feel like I don't have enough time to prepare because we made the decision so late in the pregnancy, but I really couldnt be happier about it regardless. My parents are now supporting our decision even though they dont necessarily agree with it. I'm glad that mom will be helping me to get everything together. I don't know if this would have been possible without their support (we are planning to do it at their house too).

Thanx for the support from you ladies! It's so nice to have a place where I can talk about this openly without fear of being criticized.

Jenny
