I hate to be one of those people that just pop in with a question w/o ever posting before but I am in need of any advise anyone has to offer.

I'm Jodi and my LO is Billy, just turned one last week. I've BF him and he loved it so much he never took a bottle. We've been working on a cup but after one or two sips he spits everything out. Up until this morning he was nursing 5-7 times a day still.

Basically right now he is refusing to nurse or take any fluids at all. Its been 27 hours now since he last nursed. We were at the ER this morning and this evening (our pedi wanted us to take him to get checked for dehyration both times). Ended up leaving both times w/o an IV, he showed no signs of dehyration and they cleared him of any medical reason for not drinking.

He does have an upper respiratory infection (stuffy nose/coughing) but he hasnt been stuffy since this morning. Is this a nursing strike? I know most babies don't self wean at this age (or do it more gradually) so I'm at a loss. I am beside myself; I can't imagine our BF relationship ending this way.

Thanks if you got through this all, I'm just worried about his wet diapers (were fine this AM but aren't very wet now) and everything right now. He cried and cried before bed tonight and would not nurse. I tried when he was asleep, sleepy, in the warm shower with him. Help!

im really sorry mama sari would not want to nurse at all while she was stuffy,so maybe this is what the reason is?did they look at his throat?a lot of times a sore throat will keep them from nursing.try saline and a humidifier(cool helped her more) to open him up or maybe some childrens zyrtec(a half dose was okay by our doc,plz check with yours first)?i hope it works and things go back to normal for you, just keep offering and he will come around.HUGS

Thanks. We had him at the pedi Monday and put him on a decongestion antibotic and something for his cough (crope). We have been using the saline drops and humidifier too. He has been really stuffy but his throat/ears look good.

He still isn't nursing. We ended up back at ER last night and they decided to give him an IV with fluids since it had been so long. We are still having to use a syringe to get any fluids in him (we are just using BM). I am going to continue offering and pumping but I don't think he will come around.

Could his mouth hurt when he nurses? I hope the meds clear up the stuffiness and he feels better. Have you tried nursing him at night? I hope he comes around and the nursing strike ends soon.

We did have him back at pedi for a follow up and his throat was a little red but strep test came back negative. Its been 11 days and he still hasn't nursed. We are still doing syringe feedings of BM since he won't drink out of a cup. I don't think he will nurse again. I keep offering but he either runs away, hits at it, or pulls my shirt back down I didn't know weaning could be so emotionally hard; I can't believe how sad I am about it.

Is he feeling any better? There's some nasty virus' going around these days.

I remember when Mak weaned I was heartbroken. It's such an emotional connection.

Thanks - he is feeling better and isn't congested at all. Its reassuring to hear that others have felt the same way about weaning. He went from one extreme to the other!

Thanks for asking! He did wean. He is doing much better with drinking out of his straw cup and once we figured out he was having trouble with cows milk I continued to pump and we transitioned him to lactose free whole milk. I'm down to pumping 3-4 ounces a day which he takes in a sippy with the lactose free milk. I'm ready to stop and be done with that pump!

I'm still a bit sad about how it all happened but I tried everything I could to get him nursing again and he wasn't having it. I still offer some days and he shakes his head no every single time so I know we are done. He won't oven open or go near it! Even the LLL in my area was stunned that he would wean so abruptly and at the age of 1. I tried all their suggestions as well with no luck. Bittersweet ending I suppose.

I don't think I'm pregnant, haven't had a PP AF yet but I'm thinking I will soon since I am just about done pumping. I haven't taken a test in a while, maybe I should to be sure!!!!

It can't hurt to pick up a dollar store test!

I am sorry he weaned as he did. That is very hard! However, he got all the goods for a year plus now and all the effort you have done pumping counts for a bunch! WTG! And I am sure we will see you back here whenever you do have that next one!
