Trying to get some discussion here

I'm curious, do you see yourself nursing a 5 year old? Do you think you could? Did you ever think that you could be nursing that long when you decided to nurse past a year?

How about your LO? Do you think s/he'd like to be nursing for that long?

I prefer not to be nursing that long, but I will never say never. I never, when DD was born, and especially before she was born, i would have said never past a year, but look at us now! LOL. If you asked DD right now she would say FOREVER.

nope, 2 years is MY limit. we are less than 2 months away, so i will start encouraging the weaning process soon. i always knew i'd BF (and pump at work) til a year. but i never thought i'd still be nursing my 22+ month old! he only nurses morning and bedtime, and he's been cutting the sessions down to less than 5 min himself. so i think he will be ready to stop soon. i hope it goes smoothly. i've gotten used to really good sleep after a year+ with none at all!

I'm going to echo the "never say never" sentiment. I've dined on many of my words since becoming a mother, I don't have room for another single one! LOL

I never dreamed I'd be nursing a 2.5 AND 1yo at the same time when I first became pregnant, yet here we are.

I never thought I'd be nursing past 12 months...but here we are. But I'll be done at 2. I just don't think I can do it any longer than that.

I don't think I could and would be surprised if we did, but I'll never say never. Each month is a milestone for us and when we passed the 12 month mark I was sure that 2yrs would be time to wean but now that we're approaching 20 months I don't see that happening and I'm totally fine with that. No idea when she'll wean but it'll be child lead.

I never saw myself nursing past a year, let alone 4! I felt done around the time Abby turned 3, but I think a lot of that is because I was also nursing another baby. I think I will probably feel the same way when the new baby comes if Anna is still nursing. I wouldn't be opposed to nursing that long, especially if they were only nurse a few times a week or month like Abby did at the end.

Like some of the others I won't say never, but I have a hard time seeing myself nursing a 5 year old. My goal was 2 years, since that's what the WHO recommends, and while I won't make Cherie wean, I am definitely starting to want my body back. Maybe if she would sleep through the night I wouldn't mind as much. I do enjoy nursing her to sleep and first thing in the morning. She doesn't nurse much during the day, if at all. If she had it her way, she'd be nursing until college! Lol.

We shall see. I am not opposed to the idea, it just seems so far away.

I'm not sure if I could do 5 years..
I want her done by 3, personally, because I'm going to want my body back at some point! LOL
Up until 2 1/2 or so, she can nurse as much as she'd like..then I'll probably (maybe..) try to encourage weaning. If she refuses I won't push it, though

If you asked her, she'd be nursing forever and ever. She's not quite a year old, but she nurses every 3-5hrs during the day, and every 2-3 at night. I was asked recently how often she nursed? 3-5 times a day? Uhm..no.. let's try 5-7 or more, depending on her mood. And I don't see that changing any time soon!

Audrey still thinks booby is way better than food, so I have no idea when she'll start to wean. I'm in no hurry, but I can't imagine her as a 5 year old yet either. I'm just gonna take it one day at a time.

Hope she learns to STTN before too much longer, though.

Never say never, but I seriously doubt it. I have done some parent led weaning to get him night weaned and nursing down to 4 times a day. I really doubt he would want to nurse till age 5, I just don't see it. I would probably wean before then.
I used to say I wanted to be one by age 2 for sure and now I am not sure. I am going to see how it goes with pregnancy and my milk drying up or not. If he doesn't show any signs of wanting to wean I am leaning towards tandem if he wants to. I just think it would cause a lot of jealousy on his part of the new baby if I weaned him right before a baby came.

Leila is 3 now and while I would never FORCE her, I am truly done. I am ready whenever she is ready. I really think that as we move towards 4 I will feel more and more uncomfortable and unhappy with the idea. I guess we will see! Either way, Owen is not even 18 months yet so we will see with him. I want him to get at least his good two years and then anything beyond that is just icing on the cake.

So to answer your question I don't feel super comfortable with 5 but would if they continued to be reluctant to wean.

I'm totally in to child led weaning, but I honestly can't see myself going past 2.5/3 years. Just for my own comfort level I think....but never say never right?

I've been mentally psyching myself into nursing a 5 year old, just in case that happens. Before I said that I expected to nurse for 2-4 years but since we're getting close to 3 years I decided to push the limit in my mind further. I still enjoy nursing and am sure I'll enjoy it even more once the pregnancy is over and it doesnt hurt anymore. I havent gotten any feelings of missing my body or wanting it back for myself. Before I ever got pregnant I didnt like my big boobs so I suppose I still like that they get to do their designed purpose for a while.
