When she was younger I'd lay her on her back as that's what's recommended. Now as soon as I put her in she rolls to her side and usually her left side. Then she often ends up on her tummy in the middle of night with her legs pulled under her belly.
It depends on age as well. For preventing SIDS the back is better. My first slept on his back until he went into his big crib. He was 9 months old then (a bit of a late bloomer - that's when he learned to sit up). From that point on he has always slept on his stomach. I would try to turn him over and he just flipped around to his stomach again. Still sleeps that way and he's 3. My 5 month old always sleeps on his back.
My 7 month old son has slept on his side since he came home from the hospital. I always lay him on his back, then he finds his comfy position. Now he flips to his tummy a lot of nights almost instantly when I put him down. He doesn't stay on his back that often. Side or back with his arms over his face. Guess it's cozier that way.
