My daughter is in kindergarten and we have been having the hardest time doing her homework. She has these words that she has to be able to read and spell and know everything about them. What we have been doing is I say the word, than we sound it out, we figure out how it is spelled and write it down. Than she uses it in a sentence. She doesn't seem to remember what the letters look like and what sounds they make. I feel really bad because it makes me upset that she isn't getting it. My husband finally asked her if she is having the same trouble at school and she said no because they just copy the words from the board. Am I just over teaching her with this? I want her to get it but I don't know if just copying the words is the correct way. Please give any advice that you have???

Ask the teacher for a conference and talk to her about it.

My son is in 1st grade, and they only started sentences this year (I think). But it sounds like you daughter is just struggling with the enormous amount of info we have to process to learn to read. I bet she's right in there with the other kids. But you'll feel better if you speak to the teacher.

I went in yeaterday and talked to her teacher and I found out what has been going on. Sadie has epilepsy and back in January she had some seizures at school and they wouldn't let her return until she had seen her doctor. The soonest I was able to get her in was on the 8th of Feb. So she missed 3 weeks of school. While she was gone we worked on stuff at home and I even went it and picked up her homework. Her teacher changed how she was teaching to this new way and Sadie didn't know so she was upset. Everything seems to have work out. Hopefully.
