My daughter who is in 4th grade wants a facebook account. I really dont know if she is old enough for it yet. To make things worse her friend got one yesterday and as my daughter says "Ah Mom thats no fair she is only in the 3rd grade!!!!"
So do your kids have facebook (or myspace) accounts? If they do what age where they when they got it?

Absolutely not. I just signed up for FB like 2 weeks ago myself and use it VERY minimally. I've also known a lot of people that are on FB that have had their e-mail accounts hacked into a such.

Personally my son will not be getting a FB account AT LEAST until he's a teenager.

Joe has one, he likes to play farmville and cafe world. And that's all he does on there. He logs in everyday and sometimes takes care of his stuff (usually he just spends all the coins on decorations then complains to me when he can't afford to plant anything LOL!). His page is set to private so no one can see anything and *I* have to approve any and ALL friends, which he knows and at this age he doesn't care. Right now he's got like 5 friends - all family of course. He knows that you don't put your address or number up so I'm ok with it. He also has an e-mail acct, which I check before him everyday to filter it, and he sends e-mail to his grandma and gets e-mails from her, and ME lol. I think as long as you keep very tight control over it, it's fine. Once Joe's in his teens I'll step back and let him have his privacy but for now I'll control it for saftey. And I don't think it's odd, a lot of people I know let their 8-9 yr olds get e-mail accts and FB accts, one of my friends sons actually has myspace.

and do you set it so people cant search for him. There are alot of kids around here that have it. LOL i think part of the problem is I see some of the stuff people post. But if i could check it before she goes on each day. All she really wants it for is farmville too.

My 11 year old wants a FB account but I won't let him either. Mainly because he needs to get his grades up to be able to do anything fun like that. Anyway, kids that young really aren't supposed to, it's more a place for adults. A lot of people make a FB page for their kids by putting in the wrong birth year so FB thinks they are older, but on their page they put the right birthday. (So if your child's friend has a FB account their parents let them lie about their birthday. Are you okay with that? I'm not.) I personally feel he can wait until he's old enough for something like that. I always get random friend requests from people I don't know and if he did, he would just add them to his friends. Who knows what kind of information he would give to strangers, so no, I don't think he's ready.

Well you'd have to know the e-mail if you wanted to find him, which there's a very limited amount of people who know it (me, DH, and some other family members).Joe doesn't accept anyone, he knows better, so he doesn't have anyone on there that would post anything questionable (like I said, it's all family) so it's not a worry to me. Yes, you DO have to lie about the age to set it up, but, I guess that just doesn't bother me that much (I never changed it to his right age - I don't even think he knows!). It just comes down to trust for me, I trust him completely on there - I know he's not going to be searching for anyone or trying to meet up so I'm not worried lol. He's not going to be doing anything questionable and I think farmville and cafe world are pretty harmless.

I wont let my daughters get one. They dont think it is fair since their cousins have one (10 and 7). I don't see a need at this age.

My son has a myspace.. But it is under my email and my password. So I can check it when I want.. I also have it restricted in some areas.. And he doesn't accept friends unless they are family or friends around his age that we know...

My daughters are 6 and 2 thankfully not @ that age yet to where they want their own however my 6yr old knows what it is because I have both of them myspace and facebook. The most she has asked when I'm playing farmville, etc is just to watch. At her age she would not have one even if she asked. That is something we can discuss when she is a teenager. But I don't feel there is any harm if you let them have one and take all the necessary steps to make sure they are protected. Especially if the main reason they want it is just for the flash games on there.

Nope!! My dd is in 4th grade as well. I let her play games on mine but absolutely will not let her have one of her own!

My 4th grader hasn't even heard of one yet, I don't beleive. They are still very limited on where they can go on the computer.
