Sounds like the squares are early perimeter? I know my son was doing area and perimeter in 2nd grade.

To be honest, there have been times I didn't know and I don't do math, so those are the times I just have him not do it and I send in a note or shoot the teacher an email saying I couldn't figure it out and he needs help. I've never had an issue doing that and then his teacher was happy to help him the following day and make sure he understood it.

Don't stress out over the homework. If you don't understand it, just let the teacher know and they're usually understanding about it.

I feel your pain! I make my husband help with all the math homework.

Meghan had some good advice though. Just let the teacher know you and your son put in a good effort to figure it out. Let her know specifically what he didn't understand so she can reinforce it in class.

good luck.

I agree! I used to teach before I had kids and I always appreciated the parents and child trying it at home and letting me know if they couldn't figure it out. I was always willing to help the child the following day. Sometimes the work sheets are worded poorly, and if you (parents) weren't in class that day when it was presented, it is really hard to understand.

I hear you! As a teacher, it's crazy the things they learn these days and the WAYS they are being taught. By all means if you don't get it and the child doesn't either send a note. I'd rather know that a student struggled so there can be some re-teaching. Lots of our HW comes home with an example or some sort of explanation.

I'm so sorry! I know, not only can kids feel stressed in school when they get older due to dealing with more advance home-work, but so do we! Have you tried hiring a tutor? I wish you and your kid the best!
