Schools that are K-5 or K-8
A couple years ago I hated the idea of K-8 school but now that I have one going into 6th and one going into 1st, the only thing I like about our school is that it's K-8th! I wish they all were lol!

It doesn't really matter to me. Our schools are K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. When Brinlee goes to middle school, Isabel will be in 3rd grade.
With an age difference like that, they would eventually go to two different schools anyway, whether it was 6th grade or 9th grade, kwim? It will be nice for you to have them in the same school longer though, and maybe your older child can help your younger get to class. I know my older DD is so excited and eager to help her little sister get to class, she talks about it all the time.

Ours is K-5. I like that better. I don't think I would like my Kindergartener to go to school with 8th graders. Not like they would be in the same class or anything but have you heard the mouths on some of these teens and pre-teens. I just like them being with kids closer to their age. Our elementary, middle school and high school are all right together anyway so the kids wont be far from each other when they do get to 6th grade.

Ours are K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 and it doesn't make much difference to me because I have kids in each school.

I went to a K-8 school as a child and I liked it, but then again, it was all that I knew. My kids go to a school that ranges from birth to 8th grade. Our public schools are K-5, 6-8, 9-12.

Neither. Personally I liked the old way of K-6, then 7-8 and then 9-12. I don't think that 6th graders should be with 8th graders, but I also don't think that K's should be with 8th graders. So I liked them when they were broken up a little bit better.
For us public school is K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Now a couple of the charter schools are K-8. For kid purposes I don't care since I only have one.

I wouldn't want K-8. I think there needs to be a separation. But I would have liked to have had Ari in the same school with Nat this year (she's in k & Ari's in 6th). But after the 1st few weeks it didn't really make a difference.

K-6 here also . I'm glad that Brendan will be in the same school as his cousin when she starts going as it will only be a couple years.
I do wish our school was K-8 that way Brendan could end up riding the bus close to our house as once he gets into 7th grade they have to walk to a farther bus stop and in the Winter because no bus in front of our home because we live to close to that school as for a bus home pick up you would have to be 3 miles away and we are only 1 mile n half

Our school district is screwy. We have 2 buildings of K-2, then everyone goes to same building for the rest of the way but the buildings change. We have one building for 3-4, another for 5-6, then 7-12 are in "the castle" though DH tells me (he grew up in this district, i didn't) that 7-9 are separated from 10-12. This is the district that Kayley (my preschooler) will go through unless we are able to move first.
Sean's Montessori school is K-12. Not sure how I feel about it. Our Montessori school seems to be mostly kids who are developmentally delayed in some way or another. So not sure if that changes how I feel or not. LOL (considering i don't know how i'd feel if were all "typical")

Joe walked Jay to class for the first several weeks of school! Our school have a very strict "NO PARENT" policy - you cannot walk your kids to class. That made me very uncomfortable because Jay had no clue where he was going and there were only 2 staff members out to help the drop offs and another 2 to help bused kids so there was no way they'd walk each Kindergartener to class! Joe also picks Jay up from class when the bell rings and makes sure he gets on the bus and off at the right bus stop!
Our school seperates the middle school pretty well from the K-5 kids, they have their own building -own library - own gym. They also run 2 buses - 1 for K-5 and one for 6-8, what I thought was neat though is that if a 6-8th has a sibling they can ride that bus with their sibling which is nice. And our kids have assigned seats - they have to sit with their siblings.

A NO PARENT policy!?!?!? For kindergarteners!??? That would really bother me too! especially with so few staff around to help. It sounds like Jay has a great big brother to help him out though.
I actually love that my daughters school is K-12. The high school technically has its own campus and the middle schoolers are in a seprate wing of the building but they're close enough that there's still lots of interaction between all the grades.
For the first 2 weeks of school the 8th graders are paired up with kindergarteners. They help them find their classrooms in the mornings and connect with their carpool in the afternoon. And for the first couple days the kindergarteners are at school for lunch, the 8th graders will eat with them too. I personally LOVED this, especially this year with Ellie in kinder. and Abbey in 8th. I want my girls looking out for eachother.
I think it probably helps though that the school is relatively small and has a really low student/teacher ratio. I'm not sure I would like this much interaction between the grades if it were a public school with less adult supervision. I guess it comes down to the culture within the school. If they're purposely supporting positive interactions between grade levels then it's a good thing. If they just happen to be sharing space then maybe not.
Plus it's nice for me as a parent to only have one school to deal with. It's less paperwork, fewer scheduling conflicts, and one set of rules/policies to follow. This is our 11th year in the same school so we really feel like a part of a community.

K-8. I think it gives the older kids a chance to be role models, rather than throwing them in a new environment where everyone just wants to be cool.

depending on where you are in New Zealand, there are schools that are:
NE (year 1) to Year6
NE to Year 8
NE to Year 13
Year 7 to Year 8 (referred to as intermediate school) (middle school?)
Year 9 to Year 13
I would LIKE Gaby to go to a NE-Y8, then Y9-Y13 school but chances are she'll do NE-Y6, Y6-Y7 & Y9-13

Are you from New Zealand Emma?
Awesome, I think there is only one system in Holland if I get it right, and that would be what you call K-8 ( I think. 4-12)

When I went to school, it was K-5 and so on, so that's all I know. My sons school is the same way.
I don't even think 5th graders should be with Kindergarteners. My nephew has been getting bullied on his bus by the older kids and the poor thing is only in the Kindergarten. The older kids are supposed to sit towards the back, while the younger ones are upfront, but it doesn't make much difference.
