Hello!!

Tiny question: my eldest daughter Anna is 7, is she a gradeschooler or a pre-schooler? I'm frmo Holland, so I'm not so familiar with these terms! My husband is English, but he pretty much grew up here in Holland too!

A 7 year old would be a gradeschooler. That would likely be a 1st or 2nd grader, based on schooling here in the United States. How do they do grade levels over in Holland?

Preschoolers are 3 & 4 years old, sometimes 5 if they miss the birthday cutoff for kindergarten.

@er!ca ! Great! I'll join the club then
Here they start primairy school at 4 and it ends at age 12, then they pass on to secondairy school.
We do have some sort of pre-school, that's 2.5-4, but pre-school is not obliged, day-care kids usually don't go there because they already learn to prepare for school there , just some basic skills & social interactions!

Same as in the states, preschool is not a requirement. My oldest never went, didn't go to daycare either, though I did teach her at home. I have a 3.5 year old who has never been to daycare, and I'm debating if I'm going to send her to preschool later this year.

Primary school is referred to as elementary school here. Some elementary schools are Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Others start at Kindergarten and go to 6th grade or 8th grade, it really just depends on location. These grades are what would be considered gradeschoolers. Ages typically range from 5 to 10-12 (again, depending on the school).

After elementary (primary) school, kids move to a school that is sometimes referred to as middle school or junior high school. These grades are usually 6th grade to 8th grade, or sometimes 7th grade to 9th grade. After that, kids go to high school, which ends at grade 12, and then they're off to college (hopefully)!

In some states, like mine (Indiana), kindergarten is not required and children are not required to be enrolled in school until the year that they turn 7.

@Erica Thanks for your detailed explanation! I'm not sure I understand all of it, but it helps
We have 3 different types of secondairy/ middle schools, I'll try to explain if you're interested?
1. VMBO: 12-16. This is for the 'least smart '(I hate to put it so bluntly, but it's clearest to make a general explanation! I hope not to offend anyone!) kids and it prepares you for a job, not typically a real career. Jobs like: a cleaner, nurse, hairdresser, that sort of things.
2. HAVO: 12-17 : Prepares you for slightly higher jobs after a college (college in Holland is for jobs like this: becoming a teacher, for instance .Kind of 'middle class' jobs if that makes sense?)
3. VWO: 12-18: similar to A-levels in England I think. After this you can go straight to University (Uni here is for actual 'careers' so to put it). You can study things like: Medicine, law, economics, psychology etc.

It's very bluntly put, but I hopei t makes sense!!

Kindergarten is required in Ohio, and children have to be enrolled the year they turn 6.

I don't know any children who have not attended first grade, the majority of children do go to first grade, and it's typically when they're 5.

HI Lucia_mommy! I'm glad you're here. I'm excited to learn more about a different school system.

I just learned recently that in Washington state (where I lived from age 12-18) school isn't required at all before age 8! I can't imagine wating that long. No one I know who still lives there does but I think it's crazy that they could.
