that my state finally wisened up and decided that 5 years old was not enough to be in a car seat/booster seat. Our previous law was 4 years or under had to be in a car/booster seat, any child over 5 did not have to be. They just put into effect that it's 7 or under (so at 8 they can get out) AND less than 57 inches tall must be in a booster or car seat. I know some who are upset, but so glad Arizona finally jumped on the safety band wagon! My son is going to be 11 in just 2 months, but he's still only 54 or 55 inches tall and does not fit properly into a regular seatbelt and yep, he is still in a booster seat in both of our vehicles and will be until he reaches that 57 inch mark and fits properly in the regular vehicle seatbelt. I just couldn't have imagined putting him in nothing at all when he was only 5.

What are the laws in your state?

I think it should just be common sense really. I can't put my 7 1/2 year old (of average height) in the car without a booster, because that makes the seatbelt go right across her neck. When she is tall enough for the seatbelt to fit her properly I will take her out of the booster...whatever age that is.

In Maryland the law is 8 OR 4 foot 9 inches.

It really doesn't matter though, because I've never seen or heard of it being checked or enforced. Mississippi was even worse...I never saw any other kids from the elementary school in boosters, and many younger kids weren't in car seats either. Now in Connecticut they would ticket people, but even then it had to be really over the top - like an infant in no carseat at all.

Oh it's definitely enforced in CA and it's started to be enforced here in AZ as well thankfully. It was also enforced well when I lived in Louisiana.

Sounds similar to our rules. Under 4'8"or under age 8 they need to be in a booster. All under 4 must be in a carseat.

Over here all kids under 12 years old or less than 53 inches in height must be in a car seat/booster. The fine is 500 (around $800) if kids aren't restrained correctly.

I don't even know what the laws are.

Sunny and Lux are both way too tall for the booster, the seatbelt wouldn't go over their shoulders if they were in one, they grew out of them at around the 6yr old mark.

Sasha has one, but he won't be in it for much longer, give it another year and he will be too tall for it too.

I actually don't know the laws for FL, but I'm sure I'm within them, I'm very car-seat careful. My babies will RF until at least 2 years, then we flip them around but they will stay in that car seat until age 4-5, maybe longer if they fit the weight/height for it. Then high back boosters until they outgrow those and my 11 yr old is still in a no back booster and probably will be for a few more years because he's very short for his age.

This was/is us as well. I know many who think I'm crazy having my 10, almost 11 year old in a booster, but he's only 54 inches tall, so he doesn't meet the height requirement law or no law it's about safety for me. He understands he'll be in it until he is 57 inches tall and can properly fit in the regular seatbelt.
