Does your gradeschooler like to read? Do they have a library card of their own or do they just get books from the school library?

He LOVES to read. We have a library card, but to be honest, we hardly ever use it. We just never get around to reading them all, and then end up bringing them back late, etc. He DOES check books out at the school library though. Plus, he has a TON of books on his shelf that he hasn't even read yet. Right now he's on a Diary Of A Wimpy Kid kick again. He read them all in Kindergarten, and is reading them again. He's also read the 1st 3 Harry Potters, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Lemony Snicket, etc. He's very into reading.

Hailey has had her own library card since she was 4. She loves going to the library, but doesn't always read everything she checks out. Our local library has evening hours on Mondays, so we try to go every week.

When Parker was 2, I took him to the Story time at the Library every Tuesday morning. They all sat on the carpet, and a lady read a story, sang a song, etc. He LOVED it. So, since we were going every week, I was good about checking a lot of books out for him. Now, since we don't go on a regular basis, I find it a pain to keep having to remember to take stuff back, make the trip to do so, etc. He has enough books of his own to last forever, so I don't feel the need.

Last year he had a project to do, where he had to research Native Americans. We COULD have done it the easy way, and used Google. But, I took him to the library to look up books, and he got his info that way. He actually loved it, and I just wanted him to have that experience. So, call me old fashioned! LOL

We got ds a library card to celebrate when he figured out that he could read.

Our library lets nonreaders have cards, but it just felt more special that way. He was able to "sign" it himself by then, with just his nickname since he has a hyphenated first name.

We only get three reserves and four ILLs on each card, so it makes a huge difference.

He gets very excited about being able to read himself, but of course I still read aloud to him.
