What are some of your favorite side dishes?

Do you put a lot of emphasis on how well you think it'll pair with your main dish? Or do you make whatever sounds good?

steamed broccoli is my favorite. Stone wont eat it cooked, so he gets fresh.

Mason loved mashed potatoes so that's a side that is used often.

I like things that compliment the main dish but its not a necessity. And I do try to have more veggies than carbs. I.e. I try not to serve mac n cheese & taters together.

I'm most concerned that it's somewhat balanced, but usually things go together well enough anyway.

I make a lot of simple barley side dishes, and use whole grain rice once a week or so, too. Oven roasted potatoes are popular around here too. I can also make an awesome risotto, so that's another versatile option for us.

I do a lot of steamed vegetables, occasionally sauteed and sometimes I'll just do a salad.

It's all pretty standard fare but I try to find ways to make it fun or special, depending on what the rest of the meal is and what I have in the house.

I usually try to pair things well. Last night I made some garlic cheddar biscuits with dinner despite knowing they wouldn't pair well just because I REALLY wanted them.

We do mashed potatoes a lot.

I usually try to pair my sides with the main dish.

.
Please share the wild rice and barley ideas

Anyone wanna post their side dish recipe? I make a mean mac and cheese, or mashed potatoes, but that's really the only thing that I know how to make in regard to sides (and 100 other ways to make potatoes, but it's so redundant).

I just pretty much make whatever I want...I don't necessarily think that something like cheddar biscuits WOULDN'T go with just about everything! lol

I do biscuits and lipton rice sides a lot. We try to have a veggie side, too, usually corn or green beans (although I LOVE the Green Giant Steamers "Healthy Colors" line), or a fruit.

I like my sides to go with my main dish. Although matching is a rhyme or reason only understood by me.

Side fall under carb or veggie in my mind. Or fav is anything potato...

I make everything to pair well with the main. We have typically done more rice or noodles than potatoes, but lately we've been making a lot of roasted potatoes. DD likes corn, so we eat a lot of that as well.

I try to make them somewhat go together. We aren't big vegetable eaters (though I'm trying to incorporate more), so we have a lot of different potato and pasta sides. We do like green salad and have those often. Corn, especially fresh Iowa sweet corn in season, makes frequent appearances.

I love broccoli cooked with bacon. Roasted asparagus. Zucchini and yellow squash sauteed with garlic and onion. Those are probably the sides I make most often. I do try to make sides go with the main dish but sometimes it's hard to come up with something
