We have both (and several of both...I'm a computer tech by nature and profession).
I like having a laptop because then I can be mobile (take it to work, game infront of the tv, etc). However, if I want to do some hardcore gaming I have my desktop because I can alwyas keep upgrading it for newer games - laptops are much more expensive to keep replacing (my current gaming laptop is about 5 years old and it's getting rough with graphics).

we only have a laptop at the moment and it works just fine, but DH definetly wants an all powerfull desktop for his gaming haha

It depends on what I want to do. I prefer the desktop when I work on pictures, but for emails I love the laptop.
