Anyone have teen drivers yet??? How's it going for you?? What are your state laws about teen drivers? Did they take driver's ed? How did you practice with them? Do you let them drive with friends? With younger siblings?

Meg just turned 15 and wants her learner's permit. But I'M NOT READY!!! She's my baby! She can't be driving yet!
Anyone who's BTDT already and could offer me some advice? I'd really appreciate it.

They have to be 17 to get a provisional licence over here to drive on public roads, they must be with a qualified driver at all times until they pass their driving test when they will be given their full licence.
There's no driver's ed over here, we pay a small fortune for a driving instructor to teach them, or we can teach them ourselves. Personally I'm leaving it to the professionals who have dual control cars and can slam on the breaks when needed!

not yet. David will be 13 next month. He drives his grandparents golf cart and drives the riding lawn mower, but that's it for now

Our eldest just got his lerner's permit, he's thrilled. Here you have to be 15 and 7 months to get it, and you can only drive with a licensed driver over 18 in passanger seat. Frankly, I'm thrilled for him to learn to drive. He can help shelp his younger siblings around! We did make him take a defensive driving course prior to getting his permit, and now he'll start behind the wheel training, plus taking driver's ed at school (they do behind the wheel too, but it's a long waiting list, easier to do it outside of school). Right now we've taken him around parking lots and let him drive around the neighborhood. He's a responsiable kid, very trustworthy, and knows we won't hesitate to take away the keys at any point.

Right now, he can't have friends in the car. Mostly because he doesn't have a license, and if mom is going along she might as well be driving. So far only Janis has been in the car with him driving. He's only had his permit a few weeks.

I suggest having someone who isn't you teach her. It's so hard to sit in the passanger seat and watch your baby drive. And it's stressful for both parties really. I'm a huge fan of a driver's ed or defensive driving course, especially with behind the wheel training.
