The radio station we were listening to at work played some specific songs between 8am and 8:30am to bring about remembrance.
I remember I was sitting in a college class and it was normal for our professor to leave the room for 30 minutes while we did some group discussion. He came back in earlier than usual and told us what had happened. He then spoke for just a couple minutes about how it related to our class discussion and then let us go. Classes were called off for the rest of the day.
the commons area was packed with people watching the events over and over on tv...

I was watching it happen on tv. It did not affect me personally however my brother was shipped to Iraq a week later. That was his first tour. (for those that know, this is not the brother that was killed. This is my older brother who is now in Germany.)
Most people have a visual memory of this tragedy but mine is audio. I had just moved and didn't have my cable hooked up. My DH called me from work and told me a plane had hit the WTC. He walked me through everything that happened over the phone. Right before they fell, I remember him saying..."if those building fall, all of those firefighters will be killed!"
