HI all,
I'm in the 1st tri and still on met. My ob is not sure about if I should be on it or not during the 2nd and 3rd. I've tried reading a lot about it but would really like your opinions.
Think it's safe to take during the 2nd and 3rd tri? Think it will help prevent GD? Possible harm to baby?
I would really appreciate your thoughts and advice.
thanks, Kristianna

my experience...
during my first pregnancy I took met. We hadn't really discussed a time for stopping or anything, But when I went in for my GD test it was off. I got sent to specialist and he told me to stop the Met and then test again after a week. Did that and my numbers were normal.
my second I stopped after the first trimester and had no problems with my GD test.

my doctor had me stop at 12 weeks (I stopped at 11 because of morning sickness being soooooo bad). My GD test was 120 (anything under 140 was considered normal)! The doctor was so surprised that I was that low with twins!

I am pregnant with my first as well and taking metformin. Both my endrocrinologist and midwife are thinking they will have me stop after my first trimester. But then again, they aren't really sure. I try to keep up with all the latest studies but the news is really mixed. I'm happy to read that others are struggling with the same questions.

Well I'm nearly done with my 1st tri and I still don't know if I will stay on it or not.. I'm worried that I'll get GD if I go off but I don't really know..

I stopped at 13 weeks and failed both my 1-hour and 3-hour Glucose tests. I'm now testing 4-times a day and managing with diet for GD.
I wonder if the met would have prevented the GD diagnosis.

Well I decided to take it till the end of my 2nd trimester. Which is now. I have yet another OGTT next week and I am keeping my fingers crossed. So far I've not been diagnosed with GD and I have been tested every month.
All the best to the other pregnant ladies!

I have IR and b/c of that my internist told me that I will stay on my met until 12 weeks, then he'll put me on insulin for my pg, then back on met after delivery. I had GDM on insulin with my first pg.

Brand new to the site (just signed up tonight!). I was also researching Metformin & pregnancy.
I am 21wks pregnant, found out we were expecting around 5wks pregnant (my period was 4wks late, but I'd ovulated 3wks late, I guess. our original EDD was changed after an u/s)& my family dr immediately took me off the Metformin, which I had only been on for 3 months. From what I had read about Metformin, I assumed it hadn't been proven safe to take during pregnancy, therefore my dr discontinuing my use. My midwife never said I should continue taking it or anything, I didn't think anything of it until yesterday. We had a WIC appt and saw the breastfeeding counselor and she said I should have continued Metformin throughout my pregnancy because PCOS can cause low milk supply and cause me to be unable to breastfeed. I have an appt w/my midwife in a week and plan to discuss things w/her then.
My midwife tested me for GD around 9wks since I was just diagnosed w/PCOS earlier this year and "borderline diabetic" and my mother was diagnosed as being diabetic a few yrs ago after having GD during her pregnancy w/me over 20yrs ago. My test for GD was normal & the 3hr but I will be retested at 28wks, GD can show up later in pregnancy I've heard.
SO, this doesn't really answer any questions but a lactation specialist/breastfeeding consultant did encourage taking Metformin throughout pregnancy to help w/milk production, your breast need it during the entire pregnancy to get you ready for it, she said. She is NOT a medical professional however, at least I don't guess?? She may be a breastfeeding counselor but that doesn't mean she was a nurse or anything, I have gotten not-so-great advice from the former WIC counselor...so their word isn't golden.
I think your doctor(s) should decide what medicines you continue with and for how long, they're the specialist..it's their job to know.

I know I am not on this board a lot, haven't been in a long time, but I had my second daughter 4 months ago. I stopped met 2 months pg but started up again at 6+ months. This time when I tried to BF IT WORKED! Most say to stop met after the first trimester but if you start again at the end you have a better chance of milk coming in if that is an issue.

I've never really joined this forum, not sure why because I've had PCOS since at least 1990 when my dh and I were married and my cycles went askew.
After 13 years of infertility, I went on Metformin and conceived within 3 months. My first pg. was a m/c due to the fact, I didn't know I was pg. Started implantation spotting before AF was due and doctor put me on the pill (didn't even test for pg.) 3 weeks later (after hemorraging, I m/c'd).
My 2nd baby was also a m/c. My doctor (a new ob after the last experience) thought I should go off the Metformin and within 48 hours of stopping it, I started hemorraging. I saw his heart beat 45 minutes before I lost him. He was perfect, but my body, without the Metformin, would not carry him.
With my dd, I stayed on Metformin the entire pg. In fact, I've never gone off of it since. And she was perfect! Metformin helped prevent Gestational Diabetes (which is a higher risk factor for those with PCOS..according to my endocrinologist). It also helped with my milk supply.
I did end up with 3 more m/c's...but after much testing, I found out I also had a blood clotting disorder and had to be on other meds during pg.
My DS and the new baby girl I carry, were conceived while on Metformin.
Like I said previously, I won't go off of it. It really helped my pg's and milk production for bf'ing/pumping.
