Since this is the only board I'm currently active on I figured I would ask... I hope someone has a solution. We just bought a house and we moved in last week. It's a fixer upper townhouse and we decided to renovate the living room on the weekend. We figured since we were painting the walls and replacing the baseboards we might as well replace the floor too. We put down new carpet, brown shag which looks nice and is sooo comfy but we keep getting shocked! It's driving us crazy. Ds got a shock bad enough at one point that it made him cry and we can't pet the cats because every time we touch them they get shocked. I figured maybe going over the carpet with a dryer sheet might help but it didn't and it's really the only thing I can think of. Is there anything you guys can think that we can do to stop the shocks?

I read that static elec. is caused by dry air and that a humidifier might help. I hope your DH is ok.

Yeah, a humidifier will really help with that. Um...I can't think if anything else, other than misting it down with a spray bottle! lol. Moisture is the only thing I can really think of that helps static.

You know I've never really thougth much about it. We had the same problem when we moved into our house and I just couldn't figure out what the deal was. Our house was brand new and the carpet was put in just a day or 2 before we moved in.
I bet it has something to do with the synthetic fibers in the carpet.
Poor dh and your kitties. My cats hair would stand on end all puffed out b/c of the static. It was too funny looking.

Growing up our house was very "shocking" We didn't have the money for a humidifier so my mom would take a big pot of water and boil it to get the mositure in the air. And during the winter months when it was the worst.. the water in the air also helped with the dryness.

I was just going through my posts to help refresh my memory so I can file a complaint about the hospital... gee, writing on forums sure can be handy!

I just thought I would update on our static electricity issue. Last week we all of a sudden realized that we weren't really getting shocks anymore! I guess the new carpet just needed to wear in though I'm sure that our son spilling stuff on it all the time helped too Now we just get a couple shocks every few days and they arn't as strong as they used to be. Thanks for all the suggestions though!
