I'm starting to miscarry. How much bleeding should I expect? Right now, it's just mild cramping and a lot of blood when I wipe. Will it be bad, or like AF? I'm 7 weeks along...the ER dr. didn't tell me what to expect.

I miscarried somewhere around 9 weeks. It started with spotting that picked up and then there was a gush of blood and tissue. I passed the sac. It was whole. It wasn't like a period for me either. It bled like that for a few hours and then slowed down to something more like a period. That slowed down to spotting and I did that for weeks. Its hard to say how yours will be, the further along you were the more you will bleed. I don't want to freak you out either but sometimes its best to know what might happen. i am so sorry you are going through this. Lots of hugs.

I am so very sorry you're going through this. I had a natural miscarriage a little over 5 weeks ago and I was not prepared for what was going to happen either. Everyone is different and bleeding may be light to medium or very heavy. Should keep an eye on it no matter what and stay in touch with your doctor. I was told that is wouldn't and shouldn't be heavier than a period but most of us know that is far from the truth. This is how my natural miscarriage, which was complete, happened. For two days I had light bleeding and mild cramping. Then all of a sudden I woke up on the third day with major cramps and heavy bleeding. The bleeding began to get very heavy, flowing at times. And the cramping became labor like pain. I also passed several large clots, clots that were as large as 3"x2". I did go to the hospital because I was worried about the bleeding and wanted it to be a controlled situation. I was out of control. At the hospital they assured me that very heavy bleeding as such is normal. I continued to have heavy bleeding, extremely heavy at times, and labor pains for over 4 hours. I had a bathroom in my room at the hospital and I felt an urge, I got up and as soon as I reached the bathroom a pool of blood rushed out onto the floor and I passed the sac whole and complete, sac was about 4.5"x5"x2.5". I did make it to the toilet where there was a catcher for the sac. Another reason I'm glad I did it at the hospital. Shortly after passing the sac the labor pains were gone, just about all cramping was gone, and the bleeding got lighter again. They did two pelvics and an ultrasound at the hospital to make sure the miscarriage was complete. If it had not been they would've done a D&C. The cramps returned the next day and I passed one more clot the next day as well. The bleeding was light to medium for 4 more days and off and on spotting for another 4 more days.

I am sorry for so much detail, but dr's just don't tell you what to exactly expect. I wish I had been told in detail what to expect. Nothing makes it easier but at least maybe I could've been prepared for what I saw that day.

Everyone is different and the process is different for everyone as well. If you are uncomfortable and worried at all, go to the hospital where the situation is controlled. All the drs and nurses there were very supportive and comforting to me. And because I was so worried about what was happening it was better for me to be in a safe place in case something wrong did begin to happen. Either way, you should stay in contact with your Dr and let he or she know what is happening. Most Drs request this. Your miscarriage may be similiar or it may not. I was just a little farther along than you. Fetal death was at 9 weeks and I miscarried at 13 weeks.

Again, I am sorry for such graphic detail. But if anything good can possibly come from this I hope that I can help others through it. Please feel free to email me or IM me anytime. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry for your loss.

One more thing, most drs agreed that concern starts if you're soaking 2 pads in 45 minutes to an hour. Just something to go by.

My doctor told me that the first 24 hours would be the worst. He was right, couldn't move...I bled a lot, passed the sac whole...I used a lot of OTC meds for pain and slept a lot.
This is a hard time, every time you go to the bathroom you are reminded of what is happening.

hugs and prayers
Diane

How do you tell if the sac is complete? I passed seemingly endless clots of blood and there was one huge sac but it did not appear whole...it was big, purplish, full of ground beef looking tissue when you roll up the gb into patties, but I couldn't tell if it was whole - perhaps because i wiped it. I felt it was clinging to me so I wiped it and took a close look at it on the tissue and it was pretty big.

I passed several large clots as well. But when I passed the sac it was completely different. It was not broken in any way, could not see inside of it except through some parts of it. It honestly looked like an organ. It's hard to explain but you could tell it was whole and not broken or torn in any way. I did have an ultrasound after I passed the sac and it showed that my uterus was indeed empty and the pathology report came back as complete.
