OK, I forgot how much I don't like the whole "umbilical cord falling off" thing! Poor Max. His umbilical cord fell off last night, but, I don't think it was ready. It must have gotten bumped or pulled because it looks so ucky. I went to change him last night and it was off and in his clothing. It actually grew a new scab over night. I'll ask the pediatrician about it tomorrow at his 2 wk check, but, any advice? anyone else have this happen? Man, you'd never know that I've already done all of this with three other children! I'm sure it will end up being fine, but, I also dont want to risk infection or anything else...
I was told at all the baby training classes to just use a damp (with water) clean cloth (or 4x4 gause) and then dry it with another cloth and NEVER use alcohol, but I was told by our PED on her 4 day appt to use alcohol to clean it. I ended up using the alcohol. Her belly button always looked pretty good until about 11 weeks when I discovered that it looked like it hadn't completely healed, so I started using alcohol again (2 times a day at diaper changes) and it looked better within just a couple of days.
I did the alcohol with my first three and was told, this time, that people no longer use it for the umbilical cord. The pediatrician at the hospital (not my pediatrician) said that they found it didn't really make a difference. But, I think I'll try it. It worked for the first three. I'll check with my pediatrician tomorrow. Thanks!
Erin managed to knock Patrick's off before it was ready, and I had to keep it clean I just used a damp q tip, I didn't use alcohol because I could tell it caused him discomfort. I thought that it was infected for a little while, but we were seeing his doctor twice a week because of his jaundice and she always said it looked okay...
The doc said that it looks like it should heal fine. She said to swab it with a dry q tip four times a day and if it hasn't "dried out" by next week, they'll treat it with silver nitrate (I think that's what she said....ugh, lack of sleep is making me dumb) Hopefully it will look more like a belly button and less like a wound by next week.
