I accidently posted the following in the wrong section, so I'm reposting:

Hi, my name is Elizabeth. I'm a military wife/mom and I'm thinking about learning medical transcription through Career Step. I thought this could be something that I could do no mater where I lived in the US. Is there plenty of work out there for medical transcriptionists? I don't want to learn it and then there not be any work. Does it pay well? Thanks! :.)

As with any work at home job it pays as well as you want it to pay. You're paid for productivity not hourly or salary, so if you want to only have $200-$300 extra a month you work part time, if you want $2,000-$3,000 a month you work full time so it really just depends on you. Also since it's based on productivity how much you make "hourly" depends on the audio quality, your speed of typing, and your dedication. So really, it's what you make at it.

Doing insurance transcription I pull around $1,500-$2,000 a month depending on how much I work, the audio quality, if I take overtime on weekends, etc.

As for work, yes there is always transcription work to be done, medical, legal, general, and insurance so if you have the skills under your belt you can more than likely find a job (or two).

You can go to Work at Home Jobs - free work from home job listing and check out transcription under medical and see all of the companies there that they have listed. They are all legit. If you click on their links you can see which ones are hiring.

Good luck!

Thank you for responding to my post. I was a little concerned-- I've read a couple of message boards and people were complaining that they couldn't find work because companies want at least 2 years experience. How do you get around that?

Yes that's true for many. You get around it by putting in your time in offices for a couple of years. There are some offices and hospitals that will allow you to do 6 months to 1 year in their office setting and then allow you to work from home for them after that time. But yes, unfortunately many companies require that you have at least 2 years experience before you can work from home for them, but that's with most work from home transcription comapnies, whether it's medical, legal, general, or insurance. I worked in 3 different law offices so I had much more than 2 years experience and had no problem personally.

Hey, I am doing MT training with Career Step with OneSource paying for it. Personally, I don't like the Career Step program because its all work at your own pace. I am not good or dedicated enough to study it all the time like I should be. Another military wive I know is doing MT training through another school, which I forget what its called but they have classes online once a week that meet for a few hours which I what I would have prefered. Good luck!
