My aunt and i went to go to the airport on wednesday night to pick up my uncle. I was annoyed
because i was tired and just wanted to stay home and his flight didn't get in until well
after midnight. We didn't get home until 1.30 or so and i didn't get to bed until 2am.
Around 4am i woke up to pee. As soon as i sat down to pee, i felt this weird pop/smash
combo followed by an intense pain that dropped me to my hands and knees on the bathroom
floor (yes, i still had to pee). I somehow managed to crawl back into bed and woke up mike.
i told him what had happened, but i still wasn't sure what it was. Just as I was telling him
that it was nothing and that we should just go back to sleep, i felt the pain again. It was like no
pain that i had ever felt before...so i thought maybe i should start timing it. We timed the contractions
for about 15 minutes until i realized that they were spot on 2 minutes apart. This made me a little
scared because i wasn't expecting to go from nothing to 2 minute contractions. I called my aunt and
uncle at the hotel, and told them to head on over. Mike and I both somehow managed to take a
shower and get dressed...Mike even managed to make a French Press for himself. The family arrived
and we all piled into the car to get to the hospital around 5am. I remember driving through Seattle
noticing how pretty the sunrise was and how annoyed i was that i couldn't enjoy it because of the pain.
We got to the hospital and up to maternity triage. The nurse asked me to lay down at one point
but laying down made the pain 10x worse. I then proceeded to vomit and pee the bed at the same time.
I was pretty embarassed about peeing the bed. All i could think of was, 'man, i'm that jerk that PEED THE BED
while she was in labor.' Turns out, i wasn't that jerk! My water had just broken. The nurse finally got a chance
to check me in between bouts of vomit and contractions. I was already at 4cm! I asked how soon until
i could get some pain relief and she said the magic phrase: "As soon as you want it." We hobbled
across the hall into my state-of-the-art birthing suite. Seriously, this room was nicer than most
hotels i've stayed in. Hell, it was nicer than most houses i've lived in.The next little bit is blurry
in my mind...i remember getting my iv started and accepting a mild narcotic until the epi man arrived.
The narcotic was amazing! I instantly felt calm and, though hazy, wasn't nervous anymore. Just as the narcotic
was at its peak, this very tall, booming german man came into the room. It was HANS THE EPI MAN! He was the most
hilarious man i have ever met! He LOVED his job! Boy, did i love him too! He gave me a flawless epi
and truely made the experience enjoyable. After the epi everything was wonderful. I took a much needed
nap while my family made friends with the two nurses taking care of me. The nurses were amazing and nice. I woke up after about two
hours because I started to feel my contractions. The nurse called Hans back to give me a little boost
and thought to check my cervix while we waited. I was already at 10cm! We waited about a half hour
and then began pushing. and pushing. and pushing. I was surrounded by my family and the two nurses. During my nap, the nurses and my family
made such good pals that they all started telling dirty jokes in between pushes! It was surreal. Only at my birth!
Unfortunately, Julian wasn't liking the pushing too much (or maybe the bad jokes). His
heart rate kept plummetting everytime i pushed. After about 2 hours talks of a c-section were made.
For the first time ever, i started to worry about the safety of my little guy. They let me take a little rest and then
gave me one last try. They were going to try to help him out with the vacuum. If that didn't work, I would be rushed
for an emergency c-section. Thankfully, 2 pushes with the vacuum brought my man right out! We soon realized the problem...
the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. My poor little guy! They unwrapped it quickly and he let out a happy little cry.
Julian was plopped on my chest and it was love forever He is perfect! He got 9/9 on his apgars. I even managed to get away with
just one small 1st degree tear and a labial laceration. I never thought I would be pushing for 3.5 hours! Thank god for epis!My little guy has been perfect ever since! I'm so happy he's here
Wow your story started almost like mine. I went to the bathroom and felt a pop (it was my water breaking) and then the contractions came on really fast. I'm glad to hear you had a good experience. I agree with you on the Epi! Congrats on your beautiful new baby!
thanks for sharing your story the end of your labour sounded like mine with the babies heartbeat kept dropping so i know what you mean by being scared! im so glad you managed to get him out without a c section well done!
