Here's her birth story!

My husband left for work on Tuesday night, he was working the night shift, and I was almost asleep on the couch when I felt 2 pops. I thought Layla had just kicked but all of a sudden I started leaking. Soon I had soaked through 2 pads and it was still coming out! I picked up the phone to call the hospital when it rang in my hand. It was DH doing his nightly check in call with me. I told him I was just about to call him because my water had just broken and he had better come home. He had only been at work for an hour! So I phoned the hospital who told me to come in. I was hoping to labout at home for a while but the lab messed up my Group B strep test and didn't have the results so I had to go in right away so they could start antibiotics. I was scrambling around the house with a towel between my legs waiting for dh and packing my hospital bag, which I meant to do earlier that afternoon! I can't believe I remembered to bring everything!

Once we were at the hospital I began having contractions and they started me on antibiotics, I received four doses total. At three am, I asked for some pain relief and was given some morphine. The contractions weren't that bad but I was so tired and they were coming every 5 minutes so sleep was impossible. I was able to sleep after that for a few hours but asked for another dose at 6 am. My OB came in to see me around 9am and by then the contractions had slowed way down. They were about every 15 minutes so he decided to start pitocin since my water was broken and the chance for infection was higher. The pitocin was started and at noon they considered me to be in active labour. The pain didn't get to be too bad until 3pm or so and I asked for some more morphine. They gave it to me but it didn't make a difference at this point. At 4 pm I asked for an epidural. The anesthisiologist wasn't able to come until 5:30pm. When I got it, the nurses made me lie on one side for half an hour and then I was supposed to roll over and let the other side get numb. Well wouldn't you know, I was 10 cm dilated and needed to push when I rolled over so I could feel the contractions on one side of my body the entire time.

I pushed for 2 hours but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get her head out. I'm a little upset about that but I guess that's the way it goes. So the doctor came in and used a vaccum extractor to help me. It was very painful because her head wasn't out at all so he had to go in to attach the vaccum. I really don't think my epi worked because I felt everything! The "ring of fire" is a good description for what it feels like to heve a baby's head come out your whoo ha. I tore in two places also but honestly didn't know it until after. After hear head came out, it didn't take long for the rest of her to follow. She weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and was 19 inches long. She fed right away once I was stitched up and we are working hard at it now. We waited 2 years and 37 and a half weeks to finally meet our little girl and we are so in love with her. We went to walmart today and fought over who got to push the stroller!

Jenn

Wish the epi had worked better for you, but what a great surprise! I hear that the love for baby is better than anything else you could ever feel. I'm so happy for you!

Its so sweet that you fought over who'd push the stroller! I am sorry you had a tough time and epidural trouble (i can relate thought not for the same reason). Ring of Fire...perfect description for that head coming out feeling. I remember it all to well from Sage. Good Job and I hope you are doing well!
