I've started a new sign with Jonah. "Stop" It occurred to me that the only time we really use the word "stop" is when we are telling the dog not to do something. I think it would be great if we could train the dog to know the sign for "stop" or "no" so that Jonah can tell him to stop licking his face or stop barking etc. We use hand signals to train my dog anyway, so I think it should be easy once he gets the hang of it.

Has anyone else thought of doing this? I think it will help even when Jonah becomes verbal, because verbal commands need to be pretty solid for a dog (for example, a one year old might say "dop!" instead of "stop!" or even a less recognizable toddler-version so the dog won't understand what is being asked of him) the hand signals and signs are pretty simple for both toddler and doggie to follow though!

I think that's a great idea and I hope it works for you.
We don't have any pets so I haven't had to think about things like that yet.

The dog seems to have caught on to the sign for "stop" after just a couple of training sessions. Now I think I just have to enforce it during times that I think Jonah will use it (like when he's licking Jonah's face) I'm hoping Jonah will pick up the sign at the same time.

When we got our puppy, we used the sign for Stop, and then to release her from it we snapped our fingers and said Okay. She picked it up really easily, and now we use it when we feed her so she doesn't knock us over to get to her food. I'm glad we did it, because now she's a very big dog.

I had started out teaching Kiki the sign for No when I changed her diaper and she would try to roll away, but that sign didn't seem effective enough, so I've been using Stop instead and it seems to be working a lot better.
