BTDT Moms, what words would you suggest starting with, to other mothers who are just starting?

Also, what word has been the most helpful for your LO to know how to sign (share even if it isn't a good sign to start with)

Our favorite, most helpful word has been Milk. Caoimhe is able to tell me when she is hungry/thirsty, and the sign is very easy to learn. Even though she has a large spoken vocabulary now, she still hasn't said the word milk, so the sign has been very helpful for us.

The best words to teach are things that they see all the time, a couple times a day, like change or diaper, or milk. Ones that they can get the connection to because they see it so often.

I like to teach "change" (diaper change) "milk" and "eat" first. Those are easy to reinforce throughout the day, and easy for kids to understand (the concept of "milk" is a tangible thing that can have an immediate response/consequence. Something like "thank you" or "please" are abstract and harder for children to understand until they are older) Also, that covers the most basic needs, so that your child can tell you what he/she needs.

oh, and our most helpful sign has definitely been "more." I cannot tell you how many tantrums we've avoided because he has this sign!

great ideas, ladies! I appreciate all of your input!

Thanks for the tips ladies! I know the signs for milk and more, but I will have to search for diaper and change. Those seem like good ones to start with.

I cup my palms together, and then rotate them so they kind of flip. So I start with my hands together (like I just clapped) and my right hand is on top, then I turn them so that my left hand is on top.

There are some video dictionaries listed on our resources page, and you can search words alphabetically, and see a video (which is much better than my muddled descriptions!)
