Hi! My name is April and my DD Haylea is 5 weeks old. I know it may be soon but I was thinking that I want to do baby signing with her. I went to the bookstore and saw a bunch of books but thought I would get your opinions before selecting one. Which ones are the best and do I even need one? Can I find all the info I need online? Also, when do you start signing to baby?? Thanks!
It's never too soon or too late, although books will tell you that the "prime" time to start is between six-eight months. I kind of disagree with that, because there are many benefits to starting earlier or later than that depending on what kind of person you are. In short, the earlier you start, the longer you have to wait to see your child sign. So if you start today, your child may begin to sign around nine months, and you had to wait and work on it for that long. If you wait until eight months, then your baby will probably start signing around eleven months, which is a shorter time of signing, does that make sense? So it kind of depends on you and how you feel about it. Personally, I like to sign as early as possible. I began signing with my son as soon as he was born, and I plan on signing to my new baby from birth as well.
As for information. You can find everything you need online. Basically you just need a really good video dictionary so that you can look up signs as you want to learn them. But, if you want a book, most libraries carry Baby Signs and Baby Signing for Dummies The Baby Signng for Dummies is my favorite. It has a lot of suggestions for what signs are helpful, and it was written by a BTDT mom.
