I'm new to signing and can't wait to learn more about it. I'm Nicole and mama to Makenna (2) and Madison (7 months). I tried signing with Makenna when she was an infant but never followed through and I stopped. Well, she's now 27 months old and still not really talking. I've got her on a waiting list to have a speech delay assessment and a hearing test will be scheduled soon.
In the meantime I've decided to start signing with her. Within 2 days she already picked up "more milk", "more water", and a few other signs. She's even making up her own signs and created one for playdough this week. It's like it's unlocking her communication and this is all within a week.
I'm really looking forward to seeing her add more signs and I'm praying that this will be the thing she needs to start communcating with us while she learns to talk. Looking forward to getting to know everybody and checking out your resources.
hi and welcome! I'm Jess, Mommy to Jonah and a little bean on the way in late May.
I'm glad to hear that signing has been helping Makenna communicate to you! My son is also on a waiting list for an assessment. (he is 16 months and is now only down to babbling mamama and dadada, and he says yum when he's eating. He's actually regressed in the last three months or so.) Signing has really helped me with him, a lot. Most other children his age can tell their moms verbally when they need or want something, even if it isn't the word we use for it, they have a way of communicating. Jonah doesn't do that, I don't think he can. But he signs for milk and potty and hungry, so I know what he needs. Without signing, I can't imagine what our life would be like with him. So I'm really very glad to hear that it is working with Makenna as well!
Are you going to be signing with Madison also???
