I just wanted to let you know that Jonah is having an assessment tomorrow for Early Interventions. I've said on here before that I am so thankful for Jonah's signing, because he does not communicate in any other ways. He has no expressive language, and has recently (as I said in another thread) dropped all signs that are not related to his immediate needs. He has a lot of trouble producing verbal sounds as well. He uses no verbal words at all, at 18 months even though he had three words (Momom, Daddy, and Yum!) at one point.

He also does not walk and cannot stand on his own.

We aren't sure if there is something wrong with his hearing, or if he is a little behind because of his failure to thrive a year ago. Or if it is something more cognitively serious.

I just wanted to give you ladies an update on where we are with this. All I can say is thank goodness we signed with him. For SO many reasons on this!

(Okay, I replied to this post a few days ago, but it isn't showing up now..?)

Effervescence, how did the assessment go? I hope you got a good report. Let us know what they said when you get a chance. *hugs*

yeah, and I replied back... Something happened when they updated the board on Thursday night and all of the posts made within a certain time frame were deleted. There's an announcement about it at the top of the board (I didn't see it either though, and I really thought that I was going nuts)

Here is the full update

But basically, we are going to be seen by a panel of specialists that will further test him to figure out what is going on, and where to go from there. We're also going to be having his hearing tested, to see if the sounds are muffled, so he hears the whole word but not the individual sounds. And his hips will be checked by an occupational therapist. It was a lot to take in, but I think my mind has wrapped around it, and I'm ready to do what needs to be done.

In all, it sounds like you had a pretty good appointment. I can see how a brace and possibly a hearing aid could help with most, if not all, of your concerns about Jonah's development, and I do hope that it will be that "easy" to get him back on track.

It makes sense that hip problems would keep him from walking yet (btw there are still babies in the Sept 08 PR who are just learning to walk so he may just need more time also) but he's climbing onto the couch! so I think he'll be running before we know it.

LOL We've been saying that since October. He started to let go of whatever he was standing against in October, and didn't take his first "steps" until the end of November. He's still only taking steps here and there, but he has absolutely no balance. He can't even stand without support. I know that he'll walk at some point, my concern is that it seems to take him a long time to get from one developmental step to the next. He did the same thing with crawling- it took him forever to get from the rocking on hands and knees stage to actually lifting his limbs up, and then another forever to actually propel himself forward.

She said it's kind of obvious about his hips though because when he crawls he lifts his knees off of the floor to the sides, almost like he's impersonating an elephant. We always thought that was just quirky, but it makes sense his hips would make him do that. His pedi has never seen him crawl so she wouldnt know that he does that, and I never thought to tell her because you know there are literally hundreds of variations of crawling, I just thought that was one of them.

We'll get him set right. I'm a lot calmer now that we're doing something about it. I was just getting really concerned
