Ok, I have been lurking for forever and am super interested in teaching sign language to my daughter. I know that usually they aren't receptive to it until about six months or so, which she is just past. Anyways, just for fun I only showed her one sign at about three months and it was milk. I showed her pretty consistently for a little over a month. Anyways, yesterday I was feeding her solids in the chair, she started getting antsy at the end and started doing the sign for milk.
Now, my gut tells me that she doesn't have the connection and that it's just coincidence. I have watched her for the last two days and she has done it about one other time, not in relation to wanting milk, or that I remember. But then she did it again today when DH was feeding her in the chair. She was getting antsy and started doing it again.

Have you had any experiences like this? Showing them a sign consistently for awhile and then later when they seem to grasp the concept they actually do it? I would love for her to be signing because I would do it like a mad woman. Parts of me feel like it's a coincidence, but I wish it wasn't.
TIA and I will be popping in more here now that she is old enough to start learning

Hi, and welcome out of lurkdome!

She may have been telling you that she wanted her milk, if it seemed to satiate her when you gave her the milk. Even if that isn't what she actually intended, if you want to teach her sign language anyway I would definitely enforce the meaning when she does it. If you see her doing it again while you're feeding her, just tell her "You want you're milk? Yes! Milk" and do the sign, and give her some milk. That way even if she wasn't intending on getting milk by doing those motions with her hands, she will start to connect a little faster that doing that will get her milk.

Thought I would add that Rebecca (who DEFINITELY knows the purpose of the sign 'milk') will occasionally make a motion that looks like she is asking for milk when she is actually wanting someone to come and get her down from the table. She'll sign 'all done' and then starts making a sign that resembles milk, but it is more sideways and really her purpose is to get down.

But, yeah, like the PP said if you want her to connect it, teach it to her as having the meaning milk.

yes, the sign for milk is also very similar to the action that most kids do to signify "I want..." my mom calls it the "gimme gimme" sign LOL. Jonah will also do it when he wants something he sees, or if he wants someone to pick him up. It's usually paired with kicking his feet and that "eh eh eh" noise when it is for this purpose rather than milk.

The more I watch her, the more I think she mostly connects it. She doesn't do it all the time, but she did it again last night right on schedule for her feeding. Since she started "making the sign" I have been going through with her and saying, signing, associating, etc. When she started doing it last night I did all the stuff and she was eating her bottle signing milk over and over. I really hope she is connecting it and would be super sweet!
Is 6 months about when they start picking it up or is that too early?
