Ten years ago I started my first geocities site! Looking back geocities was so cheesy but it gave me the bug to learn web design so it couldn't have been all bad! I did a course in dreamweaver after that, then started teaching myself Frontpage, and then HTML.

I started using Geocities too. I was working for CompuServe at the time. I used to spend a lot of time reading books and building my own sites. After years of trying to do freelance I finally got a stable job at a company here in Mobile, AL as webmaster. And I do freelance.

It's funny how many people started on Geocities. I actually felt really quite sad when it closed down last year.

I started with Geocities as well, way back in 1996. I was living in Australia and was using it to keep family and friends back home up to date on my travels.

I am a writer who happens to do web design to help pay the bills. While I don't consider myself freelance bc I work under a company name instead of my name alone, I suppose that is what I am as I do not work for another corporation.

I got started bc I went to a prospective client one day offering some writing for their website (which was awful) and they asked if I could redo their site. My first thought was to be a consultant but after losing that client and creating my own website, I decided there were bound to be more out there who needed my help who couldn't afford to pay the big bucks of the heavy hitting designers. So, here I am today.... making websites for small businesses without breaking the bank.

Oh and I'm self taught. Know very very little html and am only starting to learn Dreamweaver.

That's a really interesting way to get involved in the business! What kind of writing do you do?

Oh gosh. I remember GeoCities. It's amazing how far we've come. I use Drupal for a lot of higher end projects now at a local university. It has its flaws but it's so much nice than the "old days."
