I haven't posted on JM in several months because I have been extremely busy with my day job and freelance work. However, a client made me so upset tonight that JM was the one place I knew I could come "home to" and express myself.

I have a client whose website should have been completed months ago. Like back in September/October of last year. It hasn't been completed for one reason or another, but the main reason is usually because she just can't seem to send me her content right. One time I told her to email me her content in a Word document. She sends it to me in the email itself. Told her again and again within the email. Took about 4 times before she understood that sending it in a Word document was easier for me to add it to the site.

Well tonight she upset me because the one and only reason the site isn't live yet is because she continues to send me content I can't use. She is selling hair accessories. We took a ton of pictures and I added them to the site. First I just added the photos and told her to see me information for each. She sent me just basic product information. None of it according to the photos. We had a meeting and again I explained to her in the simplest of ways of how I needed her to send the information. Again I get the same type of information that had nothing at all to do with the photos on the website. So I rearrange the website thinking it would make it simple for her. Once more I explain to her that I need her to send me a Word document for each category and she needed to go to the website and provide information for each of the photos using the information I indicate on the site. I so thought that was easy enough. I was sooooooooooooo wrong. Tonight she send me again the same information, different format, but absolutely in no way does it describe any of the photos I have on the site that I asked her to view.

Its like talking to a brick wall. I am so frustrated I could scream. For the past few hours I have been trying to find a way to tell her yet again I cannot use the information she sent. Now I have to come up with some way to get done correctly because I just might snap if I have to explain anymore.

Thanks for listening to my vent.

Sorry, I think we have all had clients like that from time to time. I think you need to treat her like a five year old, put together a document with the photo's, send it to her and have her write the descriptions next to it. Unfortunately more work for you but at least it'll get done and save you further frustration.

Yeah I spoke to hubby about my extreme frustration and he came up with the same thing. Decided I will put together either a Word document or PDF both which she can fill out and send right back that way there are no confusions. I figured the PDF would be better because she can't make changes to it.

Now my problem is how I am going to tell her that again this is not the content that I need. At least without sounding mean or making her sound "stupid". You know? Hmmmmmm

I'm so sorry you have such a frustrating client I know it's hard for some people to understand exactly what is needed to complete their work but sometimes they just don't listen. I think the document idea is great. One tactic would be to completely ignore and forget what has gone before and give her the document as though she hasn't provided the information already. If or when she brings up the fact that she's sent it already you could say something along the lines of "You did, and it was great, but this will help me to put the right text with the right photographs so I can complete the work quickly."

I really hope this does the trick and she will provide you with everything you need this time!

Good news! So far anyhow. She finally went back over her previous docments and realized that it still wasn't correct. She called just to verify and I now have information I could use.
