Because everything I do is considered art to me, I will keep it forever or until I lose it. LOL I'm such a pack rat that I can't get rid of anything. Plus, if my Client comes back to me years down the road, I hopefully still have what they need. Technically I heard you should keep files for at least 7 years.
I guess that it all depends on what the file is. Anything that I've ever done for a paying client is kept indefinitely. I have all original copies of my work on two sets of disks as well as an external hard drive. Items that I do more for fun, such as siggies, I don't keep the original PSD files, just a copy of a jpg. I am planning on keeping the original files for my digital scrapbook pages indefinitely as well so that i'll always be able to print new copies if needed.
