Anyone else here celebrate Hanukkah?

We light the Menorah candles and my husband leads us in the prayers. Then we read a children's Hanukkah book and let the children play with the dreidel. Their favorite part is probably the gelt (chocolate coins). lol

Oh, good! I have a question I always wanted to ask. How do you play the dreidel game and what do the symbols mean? Someone gave me a dreidel one time and I never knew what to do with it.

Nope not me. Do you guys have any Jewish descent? I've actually never known anyone who celebrates it, until now.

I've never celebrated. I, too, have never known someone who did until now.

My mother's grandparents (on her mom's side lol) were both German Jew. Although my family has been Christians for decades, I thought it was important for my children to learn about and celebrate their heritage.

My kids are really too young to fully understand how to play dreidel. I let them spin it while we sing the dreidel song. Then we talk about the different symbols...but if we were to actually play a real game where one of them gets more gelt than another...ha! We'd have mass hysteria on our hands. rofl

Here's a good website about the dreidel and the different symbols.

Thanks for posting this. I never knew what to do with it. I looked up the rules and it wouldn't fly with my kids ether.
But you could change the rules around a bit and say something like
1- loose turn
2 take 3 coins from pot
3- eat one coin (the kids would like this )
4- loose 3 coins to the pot.

I actually dug out the dradel that someone gave me.(It is beautiful inlayed wood). Maybe I will teach my kids the game.
