Rice May Cause Worse Infant Allergies Than Cow's Milk

Summary:
Rice, often given to babies as a first solid food, can cause more frequent and more severe allergic reactions in infants than soy or cow's milk, Australian scientists found in a study.

Highlights:
*Rice triggered FPIES in 14 infants less than 12 months old, compared with 10 who had reactions to cow's milk and 7 affected by soy. More than 40 percent of babies who suffered allergic reactions to rice in The Children's Hospital study needed fluid replacement through an intravenous drip, compared with 17 percent of those who reacted to soy or cow's milk. The infants also suffered multiple reactions before rice was identified as the cause.
* Australian dietary guidelines published in 2003 recommended rice as one of the first solids to be introduced into an infant's diet between the ages of 4 and 7 months. All children with rice FPIES in the study had their first reaction at 3-6 months of age.
*FPIES doesn't occur in babies fed exclusively on breastmilk.

Interesting! I'm wondering if it's the milk/soy in the formula they are mixing with the rice cereal or just the rice itself. Rice allergies I have never heard of before.

me too. i go with common sense, and keep benadryl on hand. I introduce new things at lunch, rather than dinner, so that I can keep an eye out for reactions the rest of the day.

Maybe its partly due to starting solids so early, while the gut is still open...

That's a great observation....especially if they are testing children at 3-6 months. One of the reasons to wait until at least 6 months to start solids is because the longer you wait, the least likely they are to be allergic.

This makes sense too since it said the FPIES does not occur in children who are exclusively breastfed.

With as many objections that you guys have already come up with, it sounds as if the study is completely flawed.

I don't know if it's flawed, maybe just the conclusions aren't presented well? It sounds like it makes a good case for bf'ing exclusively until 6 months!

Ditto to Cori.
And I dunno if this means anything, but Walter was crazy sensitive to cows milk and soy when he was little, but once I switched to drinking only rice milk, his symptoms passed.
