Thanks for asking Brooke. It's been a very long and hard 5 days. Seeing her in so much pain as DH and I on the edge and panicked.
I think we may be turning a corner but you never know. Yesterday the ER doc said to wait 24 hours and if her fever didn't come down to start the antibiotics although he thought it was viral since the (rapid strep culture) came back Neg. Her tonsils were swollen and she had signs of strep but nothing conclusive.
This morning her fever is down to 100 which is the best in days. We started antibiotic treatment last night after 3 hours of crying in pain, Bri ran out in the middle of the night and said **** waiting, it was killing us and was 102 and not budging with Motrin. It was 101.5 rectally when we left the hospital yesterday about an hour after they gave her a big dose of motrin. I don't think they should have let us go until it went down even a little but whatever...
Last night she was up every hour crying for about 10 mins, crazy demands and then eventually falling back to sleep. The nurse at the Pedi told me the same thing the ER dr said yesterday, keep an eye on the fever, keep her hydrated, if fever is still up 24 hours after starting the antibiotics (although it's likely a viral illness that runs it's course in 5 days anyway - today is day 5), to call and come in, in the morning.
She has no voice at all today and talks in a whisper. I'm trying to put her down for a nap now. We both need sleep and a break.
Oh man! Hard on mommy and daddy is right! And especially hard on your sweet little girl. 5 days seems so long... I hope tonight is much better.. You could all use the rest..

Poor Maddie. Did you send off for the throat culture too? Every time I've ever had strep, the instant test comes back negative but the lab test comes back positive. Either way, hope she feels better soon!
Interesting Kristin. I heard strep can come on hard and fast and this took awhile to develop, which makes me wonder, but the acute strep symptoms did come on the day before, less than 24 hours. The ER dr said the rapid test was only 70-80% accurate which is why he prescribed the antibiotics to start if we didn't turn a corner soon. 12 hrs after first dose of antibiotic her fever is down around 99-100. They said they'd send the culture and call us if it comes back pos.
Yes, thanks, she's doing better now. We gave her first antibiotic dose around 11pm Sunday night and by mid morning it was down from 102 to 100. It has not gone back up. She can barely talk still today but she slept straight through from 8:30 to 7:30. She was very clingy this morning and didn't want to get dressed or do anything but I managed daycare drop off slow and drama free. I'm pretty sure it was Strep if the antimeds helped so much already.
