I found the platform bed I want to get Maddie on Craigslist for $100 with the headboard, so we may pick it up this week. My contemplation is, should I buy her a nightstand too?
Her room is laid out with her dressers along one wall, but when her bed is setup if we want to read her books we'll need to put the lamp next to the bed unless we use the ceiling light (bright!). Plus the nightstand could be a place to keep her bedtime books as well.
Is it a recipe for her banging her head tho? Do you think it's un necessary? Would a step stool be a better multi-use piece there - something we can sit on and read to her if we don't want to get in bed with her?
Wall closet is behind me to right and her bedroom door
Look I'm kind of going for (the bed we are buying and the nightstand I am considering)
alternative nightstand I'm considering since the handles on the one pictured above don't match her dressers
I can get either nightstand for about $35 shipped.
I'd get it. Kaija has a nightstand and that's exactly what it's used for - a small lamp and a mountain of books. She may bang into it the first night or 2 but she'll adjust quickly.
Syd doesn't have a nightstand, just because at this point she doesn't seem to really need one I guess. I have never found one that I really liked so I just don't have one in there, I am not really a matchy matchy decorator I like to mix things up (which I am sure you have figured out about me LOL) so if I found one I liked I might get it but for now there just isn't a big need for one because she has an overhead light on a dimmer for reading. If you were to get one I would probably go with one with a drawer just for some hidden storage, or put baskets or storage bins on the open shelves if there is no drawer, I like to hide clutter LOL
I like that last one you just pictured or the first (are they the same)? If it's primarily for books, then open shelves are fine so she can see and pick the stories she wants. It's a really simple design and will go with just about any style of furniture.
I would definitely go with a nightstand though. We still have a full size chair in Aidan's room from his nursery days that we use for story time and I have a small table next to it for a lamp and to put a few books on. When the chair is gone and we go with a full size bed, I'd be looking for a night side table at that point too.
I'd get the one with the open shelf and baskets. We have a book shelf next to Sam's bed that also serves as a night stand, but she flops around like crazy at night (to the point of nearly launching herself head first onto the floor) so we use bed rails still. If she does end up bumping her head, you can always tape some sort of padding to that one edge until she adjusts. DH did that with our night stands when Sam was co-sleeping with us last year AND he has some taped to the edge of her shirt dresser / hutch combo as it is exactly the right height for her to do some damage to herself. It isn't pretty, but it's only temporary.
Hehe I think I will eventually move her old changing table into the closet (folding doors) so she has more play room in there. There is a piece of drywall downstairs we can turn into a chalkboard pretty easily like Kim did in Syndey's playroom that Maddie really enjoyed. We even thought about painting the back of her bedroom door in white board paint or chalk but I decided that it's a bad idea to let her color on walls/doors.
that's funny I thought about painting our basement door on the kitchen side with the chalkboard paint but decided maybe I shouldn't encourage writing on doors LOL, the chalkboard in the playroom is probably one our cheapest investments with the biggest payout! both kids love it, Sam is starting to really like to draw on it too! and all for about $12 for the paint! and we used a drywall scrap and extra molding we had laying around to frame it out for boundary purposes LOL
We painted a strip inside Lily's closet and the top of a banged up toy table we got on discount at Pottery Barn Kids with chalkboard paint. Lily lovese it!
