I want to update my computer to Snow leopard, yes I'm behind... My question is, will I lose everything on my computer if I install it without saving everything to an external hard drive.

I was trying to back up my stuff on hubby computer since we have a shared drive and he has everything on his computer backed up. For some reason my computer will not let me save to our shared drive. I've tried looking up the error code and it still does not let me. I"m hoping to update it so i can move everything on the shared drive.

Not if you just update the OS, not wipe the drive and do a fresh install. Follow the installation instructions carefully, it will give you the option I think.
