I haven't had my hair cut in a year, not since the hacking disaster and the 'fix' I had to get the next week to clean it up. I really need a hair cut but I have a strong aversion and dislike for going to the salon. Does anyone else have this or do you enjoy it? Do you go to the same place/person every time? The last place I really liked but it was expensive. I have a hard time paying $40 for a trim.

I hate going too but it is really because I just hate taking the time to go and get it cute. I don't see the same person everytime and I don't go to expenisve place to get a cut. i can't see spending so much money when the cheaper places can do a good job too. I don't get anything fancy done. Maybe layers or a bob cut.

I've learned that (except in rare circumstances), you get what you pay for. I had an excellent hair stylist but she moved across the country. DH had been complaining about how much I was spending on my hair so I tried to go to cheaper salon. What a disaster!!!

She totally butchered my hair and the colour.. I looked like a skunk - dark base and blond streaks.

I found someone who fixed it, but she was just meh and I still wasn't getting what I wanted though she was charging fairly big $$$.

So, I switched again... someone cheaper again. Semi-butchered and ruined the colour. This was about 6 weeks ago. It took 3 visits to the salon and it's okay now, but it'll take about a year to get it back to where I want.

The salon I go to now is pretty pricey, but I like it and they did a good job fixing the last disaster. They also sell Eufora hair products which, hands down, are the best I have used in my life. They don't contain fillers, the base is aloe vera and they don't use known or suspected carcinogens.

Anyway, all that to say I have learned it's risky to shop around if you've found somewhere you like. $40 is pretty average for a cut here so it doesn't sound like they are overcharging you. I'd stick with what you know and like.

The place that butchered my hair cut I'd been there before and they charged $36! The place that 'cleaned it up' charged $40 plus tip but they are farther away than where I live now. I hate trying new places. I did have a place I went back to a few times but the girl was too chatty. I hate small talk during hair cuts. I may go back to the last pricey place. She did a good job and didn't try to make small talk. I'll call them.

I go to the hair cuttery, I am not picky about my hair haha, I just got my hair chopped off a couple months back and love it and the girl who did it was great and it only cost $20.

I'm pretty picky and only go to people I trust. If I do have to see somebody new, I only let them do a trim until I trust their skills. I also like to go off recommendations. I am really lucky that I found a great hairstylist about 2 years ago (recommendation of a co-worker) who only charges $35 per cut (that is insanely cheap for Southern California). I like going to the same person because she really understands what I like and don't like. Changing stylists can be super scary and risky and I have had some bad experiences there so I understand your hesitation. Now that I've found a good stylist though, I love getting my hair cut. I normally just do simple trims now since I am trying to grow my hair super long, but my hair always just behaves so much better after a cut.

Honestly, I usually wait for the $4.99 hair cut sale at Great Clips... They've never screwed up my hair and I seem to always get one of the same 3 ladies despite just walking in every time. My last cut I went to the beauty college and had one of the girls I work with cut my hair. She did an excellent job! It was $15 for the cut and style, but Great Clips is usually about that when they aren't doing their sales so it wasn't bad as far as I was concerned. I'm going to be sad when my friend graduates though, she's going to one of the best salons in the area and will be WAY out of my price range for a simple cut! I do agree that $40 for a trim is crazy. I've only paid that when I've had a radical change done.

I used to pay a fortune for my stylist and she was worth every penny. When I moved, I cheaped out and chose somebody locally. It's just okay and nothing to rave about. I find with working from home makes this way less a priority for me since I usually just tie it back anyway. So now I get colour and trim for $40 and a couple hours of great chatting. She's super nice and does a good enough job.

I used to pay big $$$ to get my hair done, but that's when I was having it bleached (like 12 years ago!). Now I usually go to Great Clips or another place. There is one lady that does a good job on my hair and Jacob's but I usually only stop there if we're in the area already.

40$ for both color and trim doesn't sound bad at all.

Agreed! Especially since I was used to paying $150 for it before. I think if I ever wanted a major style change, I'd search out an actual stylist.

Wow you ladies remind me how fortunate I am. I always get my hair cut and highlighted for free. : )

I first got my hair highlighted when I was 15 years old. Which then turned into a nanny job for 10 years. The mom owns her own hair salon. Not only has she always cut and highlighted my hair for free but, all my hair for proms she did too. She even did my whole wedding party for free.

My mom was a hair dresser growing up so I never went to a salon until college. Maybe that's why I have such a stong aversion to paying for haircuts.

I hate getting my hair cut and I find that I'm barely ever pleased with the results, no matter what or whom I go to, so I just drop by places who have new people in training since then the cut is normally free and the rest is really cheap but I dye my hair at home so I just get the free clip.
Results vary of course but the last girl I went to 2 weeks ago actually did a fairly good job and free lol

FWIW, I pay anyhwere from $150 (partial highlights, cut and style) to $200 (full head, cut, style). I have very thick hair and I need extra colour, etc.

It's just never worked out for me paying less so I have accepted my fate.

I have tried everything from Great clips and Hair Cuttery to pricey salons who charge and arm and a leg for a cut and a color. And I would agree with Trudy that you get what you pay for!

When I was in Highschool I found a great smaller salon with a guy who did a fantastic job with foiling my hair and always knew how to cut it just right. When I went to college it was more of a hassle to get it done so I let it go. And when I had Timmy I would kinda just go where I could get into since my schedule was tight. I also dabbled in highlighting my hair myself. Again got what I paid for...

About two years ago I started using one of the Salons at our mall, as I liked they did a lot of just walk ins as opposed to having to have an appointment, as that worked better for when I had the time and opportunity. I was paying about $120-170 depending upon what I was having done. Was always really satisfied with what I ended up with.

Then about Christmas Time my Sitter/Tim's cousin's wife/Friend told me about the girl she had been going to, who was a friend of another one of Tims cousins. She now does hair out of her basement ( has a nice salon type set up down there) but used to work at one of the bigger pricier salons in the area. Since she knows how much of a mark up the big Salons put on their services, she doesn't charge outrageous prices. I have now gone to her twice (Took me til Feb to remember to make an appointment) and been extremely satisfies with my result. She does a full foil and a cut for $80. And I am very happy with the price as well.

As to getting my hair cut/colored, I love to get it done, I just never seem to have the time. Which is another great thing about this woman, she doesn't mind if you bring your kids along as the rest of he basement is her own kids playroom so kids are safe and entertained. Not to mention I am able to just text her and tell her I am looking to get a cut and color and usually she has something available within the next 1-2 weeks.

I obviously trust her as on friday I let her Chop 8 inches of my hair off

I've been going to the same stylist for almost 15 years. The only other person who is allowed to touch my hair is the girl who fills in for her when she's away, like after she had her baby. The one time I let someone else trim it, it was horrible. I have very fine hair and she created these stupid layers that made a fringe around the bottom. She had no clue how to cut different hair types differently. I only went to her because I had a gift certificate. Fortunately my hair was long so it wasn't hard for my stylist to fix it.

I pay $38 plus tax and tip for a cut, which is every 4 weeks since my hair is so short. I get it coloured every 8 weeks, and it's about $100 plus tax and tip for that. Pretty good considering she has to highlight my hair and do 2 colour s (the dark brown base, and then the purple after the highlights are done).

Oh, and this hairdresser has taken me from dark to blonde, blonde to dark, long to short twice, and put red, pink, and purple in my hair She calls me her chameleon client

Hair isn't a big concern of mine. I go to a walk in place like Fantastic Sames or Great Clips. I pay around $10 for my haircuts. I hate going though so only do it once every 6 months or so.

My sister owns her own salon and I go to her. I love it because she knows me and what I like. And I don't have to pay. . If we ever moved away I would hate having to find a new hairdresser.

I used to pay $60 for a cut and about $110 for cut and highlights when we lived in the bigger city. It was too far once we moved and I wasn't working anymore. I tried one girl who did fine for $30 but kept pushing some vitamin cleanse stuff on me. I did not go back. I gave a different salon a try. The girl was really young and charged $35 but she did a great job. I've been going to her for a few years now and have experimented with red streaks and regular highlights. I think I only paid $70 for a cut and highlight. My mom now uses her.
