don't try to be a hero??? People are asking me more and more if I'm going to get an epi and when I say probably they say "good don't try to be a hero?!" I mean what does that mean anyway? I know natural vs medicated births are so controversial but why do people say "don't be a hero?" Makes no sense to me. I'd like to think I could do labor without an epi, but know that I probably will. Anyway, just frustrating that's all!!!!

That's silly!!! I would like to try not having an epi, just so I could "feel" the experience more and not be out of it... but I agree... if I really think I need it, bring it on!!! I think some people just don't think before they blurt stuff out and don't even really know what they're saying!!

I know. I think that's so weird. I had someone literally laugh in my face the other day when I told her that I would like to try without an EPI but that I'm open to whatever depending on how I feel. I mean, I'm not thinking that this is going to be a walk in the park by any means what so ever and I may very well want medication, but people don't need to make a girl feel like she's stupid for wanting to just see how it goes.

The things people say in response to a NCB amaze me. I actually had one of the docs in my OB Clinic laugh at me and tell me "good luck but you'll probably end up getting the epi". I was a tad ticked off that a medical professional would say that and prayed she wouldn't be working when I went into labour.

My own DH has said it to me - he's a doctor and loves to tell me about all the births he's seen and how painful they are. Sometimes I want to kick him . . .
I'd like to try it without but at this point I'm open to having one if I feel as though I need it. I don't want to be pressured into it too early but if I really feel like the pain is too much I won't feel guilty for getting it. I want a "go with the flow" birth plan, nothing set in stone, because honestly I have no idea how I'll handle birth at this point.

The other one I've heard people say.... "you won't get a medal ya know?"
Seriously, I just want to do it to prove to them that I can do it.

People are full of opinions, particularly when you are pregnant and/or have a baby. I like to think I have mastered the look of 'hmm, I'm considering what you are saying', while really thinking that I don't give a %^$$ and I'm going to do it my way!

Haha!!! I love that, Courtney! I think I need some practice sessions with that look.

Just wanted to point out that I had a very positive epi experience. I was not "out of it" at all. I was able to feel when to push even with the epi (they let it wear off some), and I was even standing on my own and in the shower like an hour and a half after I gave birth. All in all, Connor's birth was very enjoyable - we laughed and carried on a lot during delivery.
Side note: My birth story does have a scary point about my very bad BP drop, but I do have a heart condition and was on BP meds to begin with. (Just in case you read that before - didn't want you worrying about something that probably wouldn't happen to someone with normal BP.)
Back to Gwen's post: I never had anyone say that to me, thankfully, but I do like to let people know that my epi experience was a positive one. But IMO, there's a big difference between that and discouraging a woman from NCB.

I had a great birth (it surprised me afterwards to find out they classed it as traumatic?)
I had the go with the flow birthplan too!! I just thought that the midwife isnt going to make her life harder with unnecessary things. I ended up with an epi as I had to be induced, and then she was protesting a bit, and they had to up the dose to speed it up, it was an epi or a c section, (which needed an epi anyway). I had a great experience, could still walk around and didnt feel anything, I noticed the contractions like hiccups!.
Its like bottle or breast, people have their opinions and just want to make you share it!
