I am having a hard time convincing my DH to use cloth diapers. I am going to go ahead and buy some anyways.

How are you finding using cloth (my question mark isn`t working ) Do you use disposables as well

Since we are all first time moms or going to be first time moms I was just wondering how you feel using cloth is going

Shanna - where in canada did you find cloth diapers, I am having a hard time finding stores that carry them, so I am thinking that I might just have to get some off the internet!!

We are going to use cloth, altho have got sposies for when shes first born. I didnt have to worry about trying to convince DF as hes never changed before anyway so thatpart wont make a difference. I said Iideally it should work out cheaper so he was quite happy to go with it. Hopefully you can convince DH, lol by the way im thinking pink for you but thats probably coz you have a pink ticker.lol

We're using cloth as well, but sposies at first. All I had to do to convince DH was to show them to him and let him know how much money we'll save. He was completely on board after that.

yah DH is does not care about the money, he is all about the smell and the mess. He doesn`t want poop going through the washing machine. He doesn`t understand that you can get one of those little mini showers that attach to your toilet. He told me that if i want to use cloth then we have to get another washing machine just for them. i think he is being totally unreasonable.

He won`t be home most of the time anyway, he works away from home for weeks at a time, so I am going to be changing most of the diapers anyways, he can us spoises when he is at home but I will be using cloth hopefully!!

Megan, I've got DH convinced to use cloth as well. Especially when I told him how much we'll save. He too questioned the poo going thru the washer. When I explained to him that you dump the "clumpy" stuff in the toilet and that there are extra washes and rinses between those and the regular clothes he was way better with it. Everybody he tells that we are going to cloth dipe he get the same responses.....don't do it! just spend the money it's easier. But, he hasn't backed down on it. Hopefully he won't. As for the smell....from what I understand the poopy smell is only there if you keep you pail/bag closed tight and if you wash at least every few days. Have you done much research on it? PM me if you'd like....I've found TONS of sites you can go check out.

Hey Megan...I am loving using my cloth diapers. We used sposies for the first week and a half because we were given a couple of packs at showers etc. We are now using only cloth diapers and wipes, and to be honest there are pros and cons...

Obviously it isn't as easy as using sposies...because you don't just roll them up and chuck them when they're dirty. But they aren't messy either. If you're planning on BFing, the poo is more runny and doesn't smell bad. Its not like adult stinky poo, so you can tell your husband that! Its just yellow seedy poop that you can rinse in the toilet. I have also found some disposable liners for the diapers which have been saving a little time. It is like a roll of toilet paper. Its a long sheet that catches the poop, so you don't even have to scrape or anything. The wetness still gets absorbed by the diaper, and the liner catches the poop then you just flush it!. I don't know how long I will use them, but as a transition from sposies to cloth, they have been a wonderful thing! Kushies makes these liners...here is a link. They sell them at Walmart and Babies R us.
Toys"R"Us - Kushies Liners

I have been using pocket diapers and pre-folds so far. I have a huge stack of Bum Genius 3.0, Fuzzy Bunz One Size, and a bunch of thirsties covers to use with Bummis organic cotton pre-folds.

I have bought all of my diapers at this adorable shop here in Ottawa called Belly Laughs...but I know you can order from them online. Cloth Diapers They seem to have some of the best prices around here for diapers. I don't know what they would go for in Alberta.

Honestly, with using a liner, and washing them every second day, there is NO smell...less smell than sposies because with sposies you tend to leave them in the garbage longer. Honestly though, BFing poop doesn't smell bad (at least in my opinion!)

OH, and you don't soak the diapers either, you keep them dry. Just get a diaper pail liner Monkey Doodlez Pail Liner and you just throw that in the wash with the diapers. I just bought a white garbage pail with the foot pedal to open the lid from walmart, and its working wonderfully.

There are also some liners from Belly laughs that I want to try too. I am just going to use all of the kushies liners that were given to me first...then I'll let you know if there are better liners to use.

Good for you for trying to go cloth. You WILL save lots in the long run, its better for babies bum, and its really not all that much extra work!

Thanks ladies!!!

Shanna - I have tried to explain to my DH about the diaper pail and stuff but he just doesn`t seem to clue in that you don`t leave them sitting around for a week lol he is so scared of it smelling up the house!!

I told him that we can do both, but that I wanted to at least give cloth diapers a TRY!!! If it doesn`t work then we can always go back to disposables. I am going to be a full-time stay at home mom, so I really truly think I can do it

Tell him that you guys can try them for a month, and if he doesn't like it, you can sell them and recoup some of the cost.

I love our cloth! It is more work, but knowing that my DS doesn't have chemicals next to his skin, diapers aren't going into a landfill and I don't have to pay $40 every week for more dipes makes it worth it. I don't mind doing the laundry, it just took a little time to fine-tune our washing routine to avoid the diapers getting stinky. The times we have used disposables when traveling, I honestly find them to be MUCH, MUCH stinkier than my cloth.

I love using cloth! We used sposies until her cord stump fell off because everything rubbed on it, even when folded down. I still use sposies at night sometimes, but we're mostly cloth.

I didn't get DB on board, I just informed him that is what we'd be doing. If you're BFing, the poop doesn't stink. Get a covered trash can and a diaper pail liner and wash every other day and you shouldn't have issues. You don't even need to dump BF poop. It's water soluble. As for your DH having issues with poop in the washer, remind him that blowouts are extremely common with sposies, so you'll be washing poop out of clothes, changing pads, and sheets anyway! You'll have a baby, poop in the washer is pretty much inevitable, no matter what kind of diapers you use.

I don't know about stores in Canada, but where I live there's nothing. I've had to order everything online. I buy mostly used or seconds and have had no issues with quality at all. I recommend pockets and AIO's. Everyone told me to use fitteds first, but I hate them! I think it's because DD is a heavy wetter, so she soaks them completely with 1 pee, so I feel like the pee is always getting all over her.

I have a stack of Kushies that my friend has given me 2nd hand, they are still too big really, but we use them at home. I have biodegradable liners that you flush down the toilet, then I wash every other day (I dry pail them. Sometimes the poo stains them, but the line drying in the sun is a natural bleach. BF poo really doesnt smell, it just looks like curry sauce!!

At first my DH wasn't onboard with CDing, I told him I wanted to and the reasonings: cheaper, so cute, very soft, better for baby's bum and environment. And you don't have to go out in the middle of the night if you run out of diapers! He said he'd try it, but I had to do the diaper laundry. Fine with me. We used 7th Generation sposies for the first week didn't want to have to do laundry while I recovered. When we first used CDs, DH put it on DS and he's like "these are sooooo soft, if I was a baby I'd want these on my butt!" so he was pretty much sold then! He hasn't complained at all.

We love cloth! they are toooooo cute and soooo soft! We use All in ones, pockets, fitteds (we didn't like having to fold prefolds) I love converting people to cloth too I Stacy on buying used, it has saved us tons more and they are great condition.

Good luck!!!
